Symphony in Riffs
Symphony In Riffs is Benny Carter’s most famous piece. Originally composed and arranged in the 1930’s for 4 reeds and 5 brass, Benny re-scored this version for a larger band some 50 years later. Benny was known for his idiomatic saxophone writing and this chart is a great example of that. Just when you think that the soli chorus at D is as good as his saxophone writing can get, he modulates and tops it with the brilliant new section at I. T.M.I. (Too Much Information)
This Latin-rock original by Ralph Ford has a distinct Santana flavor. With a fresh sounding melody that could easily be a pop hit, Ralph has scored this one to sound full – even with reduced instrumentation – and the younger players will definitely hook into this tune. Yep, it’s in 4/4 not 5/4. A clever chart on a super classic that everyone will recognize, young or old. The bossa nova tempo is around 130 BPM and there are written suggested solos for piano and alto sax. This chart swings all the way and is very playable by a young band. Think of Take the “A” Train with a contemporary flair and you have the idea behind this inventive chart by Alan Baylock. Opening up in a swing groove, then alternating with a funk feel, bari sax, bass ‘bone, guitar and bass have the initial melodic statement in this terrific chart. Perhaps one of the most well-known jazz standards, check out this vocal with big band chart. At a swinging 152 BPM, the key is F and the vocal range is A below middle C to 3rd space C, treble clef. Drums of the Saamis fue un encargo de la Medicine Hat Concert Band Society de Medicine Hat, Alberta (Canadá). La pieza narra la fusión de las culturas de la Primera Nación (primeros nativos) y de la moderna Alberta. Los tambores tribales de apertura seguidos de la inquietante melodía que simula la flauta de madera tradicional comprenden dos temas que son la base de toda la pieza.
