Big Band Holiday
Big Band Holiday is the perfect holiday chart for the young jazz band. Arranger Carl Strommen has blended “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “Have Yourself a Merry Christmas,” and “Frosty the Snowman” into an easy-to-rehearse and very playable chart. The chart features brief written-out solos for trombone 2 and alto sax 1 and plenty of ensemble playing throughout. The brass range is modest with lead trumpet going up to written F on the top line. A superb chart! (4:25)SKU: AL26863 -

Big John’s Special
This is a great chart! Arranger David Berger is one of the masters at transcription and/or adaptation of swing era jazz charts. Big John’s Special was composed by Horace Henderson with a light airy feel but plenty of snap and energy throughout. Solos are written-out for 2nd trumpet, 3rd trumpet and 1st alto. It is a hot chart correlated to the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz For Young People™ curriculum. (3:19)SKU: AL29818 -

This delightful old jazz standard is given a fresh new face by Calvin Custer. Calvin has provided younger and less experienced bands with the opportunity to perform a ‘golden age’ big band gem. The technical demands are limited, but this chart still really swings. The solid ensemble writing will give you a chance to teach balance and blend with your group. It’s another winner from Calvin Custer! (2:47)

Blue and Sentimental
Count Basie is also known as a composer. This slow swing composed by the legendary Count and arranged by Roy Phillippe will make your young band sound like old pros. Written solos bounce around the band for alto sax, trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, and piano to spread out the opportunity to solo. Simple rhythms, easy ranges, and a nice melody provide the ideal setting for the young player to play jazz. The Count would dig this chart.SKU: ALJEM03033 -

Blue Rondo a la Turk
A show-stopping tour de force! Dave Brubeck’s fabulous tune from his classic quartet album Time Out. Arranger Kris Berg worked hard on this chart to capture the essence of Brubeck. The meter changes from 9/8 to 12/8 Afro-Cuban groove with the Brubeck rhythm patterns. Solo space for alto 1, trumpet 2 and drums. Lead trumpet goes up to high C. Blues in the Night
Down and dirty’ best describes this solid Calvin Custer arrangement of a great old standard. The popularity of this tune has not dimmed over the years, and with Calvin’s impeccable voicings, the chart sounds harder than it actually plays. Remember also that all the titles in this series are playable with reduced instrumentation. This is a great opportunity for your students to share some historical jazz music! (4:04)
