Fantasy on a Japanese Folk Song
A tour de force of exotic sounds and emotional design, this major work from Samuel Hazo will leave your audiences breathless. Based on the hauntingly beautiful Sunayama, this composition tells a story of the inner conflict of a Japanese girl who falls in love with an American. She is torn between a life with him in America and her longing for the culture of her childhood. From time to time she plays a music box given to her by her parents (Sunayama theme), bringing a flood of homeland memories. The composer weaves together a tapestry of sounds and moods as the piece builds to a fulfilling climax of musical drama and power. Dur: 5:30 (Includes Full Performance CD)SKU: HL04002375 -

Fantasy on Themes from Tchaikovsky
Tchaikovsky’s musical progress was based upon impulse, rather than upon intellectual conviction. It was his sincere response to emotional impulse and the freedom with which he ranged over almost every field of musical creation which made him as great as he was. Frank Erickson passed away before he could provide rehearsal suggestions for this piece. This was one of his final numbers.

Fantasy Sketches
Drawing inspiration from books and films of fantasy adventure, Johnnie’s three-movement suite explores a variety of descriptive moods and styles. The first movement (Wizards) has a noble and grand flavor, while the second (Elves) is more playful and mischievous in design. The concluding movement (Talking Animals) uses rhythmic energy and mixed meters in creating a bit of a rambunctious setting. Themes from the earlier movements are then brought back for the grand finale. Dur: 8:00

Farewell at Dawn
As its title suggests, “Farewell at Dawn” is a musical expression of bidding farewell to the night and beginning a new day. The piece opens softly with a gentle motive that evolves through simple, yet expressive material. A short quasi-canon provides a transition for a climax that resolves peacefully using the original musical motive. This is a piece with a mature, lyrical sound that can be performed by the youngest of bands. (1:45)SKU: AL44177 -

Feather Report
With the distinct flavor of the group Weather Report, writer Kris Berg continues his successful string of chicken-related jazz ensemble titles with Feather Report. A superb chart with a hip-hop/shuffle-swing kind of groove and a written-out tenor solo, although other players can handle the simple two-chord solo section. Some meter changes from 4 to 3 and back, but nothing dangerous. Lead trumpet range is to written A above the staff (optional C). Brass players have a tough blow in this one, but it’s worth it. Festival Dance
The Gymnopédies, published in Paris starting in 1888, are three piano compositions written by French composer and pianist Erik Satie. The name referrers to an ancient Greek festival and dance. This piece has a haunting quality to its very familiar melody while its harmonies are atmospheric and ethereal. The setting would easily stand on its own but would also lend itself well to choreography for modern dance or ballet to enhance the performance and involve additional performers on stage at your concert. The flowing lines and beautiful textures make “Festival Dance” a must for your concert band repertoire. (3:00)SKU: AL43132
