Experience some high adventure in this dynamic piece as each section of the band takes part in the excitement of discovery. The trek for the legendary caves begins with a brief introduction before the presentation of the main theme by the trumpets. Supported by expanded percussion and active accompaniment patterns, the theme is presented in a variety of moods and colors with a strong marziale feel throughout. The final destination is reached with an emphatic conclusion, bringing a satisfying end to the journey.

This work opens with an Andante section that features a haunting minor melody played by clarinets, a strong low brass bass line and assorted counterlines that offer interesting contrast. Cornets repeat the melody that leads to a rallentando pause; a fast-tempo variation emerges. This second upbeat section is in a new key and features the melody played by cornets, then by low brass and woodwinds, over syncopated tutti rhythmic figures. (Grade 1 1/2)
