“Desperta Ferro!,” or “Awake the iron!” was the battle cry of Medieval Spanish soldiers called the Almogavars. In the dim light of dawn, as they prepared for battle, these fierce soldiers would beat their swords on rocks shouting this phrase.The sparks that flew from the rocks in the eerie light of dawn, together with the soldier’s call to arms, would give any enemy pause. Awake the Iron, with its insistent unisons, energetic rhythms, modal themes, and powerful percussive writing, mirrors the ferocious intensity of the medieval battlefield. Tu Ungane
Tu Ungane (Swahili, pronounced TOO une-GAH-nay) means “Let’s join together” and refers both to musicians coming together to play as well as African and Western styles merging musically. Western musical styles such as Gospel, Blues, and Jazz owe much to African influence. African music has been influenced by the West as well, fusing British military and brass band music, along with the hymns and songs of missionaries from Europe and the United States, with tribal folk elements. Two Chinese Folk Songs
The two folk songs in this arrangement are contrasting in style but they both share the characteristic pentatonic scale that is a staple of Chinese and other Asian cultures. Wind Storm
In early December 2011, a powerful wind storm passed through Southern California, leaving thousands without electricity and severe damage to many mature trees. Written during this event, this piece uses sharply syncopated rhythms, the key of C minor and prominent percussion to convey the mood that prevailed during the storm. As is always the case, calm, clear weather returned and the lyrical slow section in E-flat major brings that to mind. Wings of Apollo
NASA’s Apollo program is known for landing the first humans on the moon in 1969. In this composition, your dauntless adventure begins with a powerful lift off. Once achieved, the main theme is presented by flutes, oboe, and then trumpets, with stabilizers provided by baritone, tenor sax, and eventually the remainder of the crew. Stage 1 boosters (a strong, rhythmic accompaniment) provide the propulsion needed to voyage through to a sea of tranquility (lyrical section).
