Commissioned by the Georgia Music Educators Association District 8 Honor Band, this lyrical work uses flowing melodic lines and creative scoring to create an effective setting for young bands. Overture 1812
Tchaikovsky’s “Overture 1812” is one of the most widely recognizable works in all of music. A bold musical statement, it was composed in 1880 to commemorate the Russian victory over Napoleon’s army in 1812. Scored by Michael Story and Robert Smith, this rendition is a perfect fit for the end of the second year of instruction. The characteristic melody builds to a dramatic punctuated conclusion. Overture on a Hymn Tune
Overture on a Hymn Tune is based on “The Old Ship Of Zion” which is found in the Early American Sacred Harp songbook. Johnnie Vinson uses a fast-slow-fast overture format to give this wonderful melody an appealing setting with plenty of variety and musicality. The slow middle section is a rhapsodic treatment of the main melody, while the two fast segments offer appealing and upbeat settings sure to be enjoyed by all. Skillfully scored to sound full with inexperienced players. Dur: 3:30SKU: HL04003197 -

Pavane (Pour Une Infante Defunte)
This hauntingly beautiful piece is one of Maurice Ravel’s most popular piano works. Robert W. Smith’s transcription for winds contrasts a ‘music box’ effect in bells and triangle against the dynamic rise and fall of the winds. Written as a contest/festival/concert work, it will also serve as a warmup chorale. A great teaching piece!SKU: ALBD01096 -

Peer Gynt Suite
Edvard Grieg’s early musical training took place in Germany, but philosophical constraints sent him back to his native Norway, where he began what is now referred to as the Norwegian School. He is best known for his Peery Gynt Suites, No. 1 & No. 2, originally written as orchestral suites and as incidental accompaniments for Ibsen’s epic drama. This sparkling scoring includes Morning Mood, The Death of Ase, Anitra’s Dance, and In The Hall Of The Mountain King. (4:56)
