A Hanukkah Festival
A Hanukkah Festival is a medley of three traditional Hanukkah songs, “Sevivon,” “Maoz Tzur,” and “Hanukkah.” “Sevivon” has a dramatic melody and is written with a variety of accompaniment leading to a brief, but impressive, clarinet cadenza that leads into “Maoz Tzur.” This traditional piece is scored with full, rich voicings along with the beautiful melody. “Hanukkah” is the festival of lights and the last section of the piece. It is a bright playful march with an exciting conclusion. A Hanukkah Festival is filled with memorable tunes that students and audiences will enjoy while paying homage to this important holiday. Children of a Different Sun
Opening with a heroic fanfare, this stunning original composition was inspired by the 15th century Inca citadel Machu Picchu and specifically the Intihuatana stone in what is now southeastern Peru where sun worship was favored. Many historians have come to refer to the Inca Empire as “Children of the Sun.” The work continues with an intense, almost frenzied, component that sets the stage for an active interplay of contrasting themes featuring a melodic statement interrupted by accented percussive statements. Choreography
Choreography was commissioned by the 2008 ATSSB All-State Band by the Association of Texas Small School Bands. Written in overture form, the piece draws its inspiration from dance movements found in contemporary stage, ballet and theatrical productions. The piece opens with fast-paced angular gestures accompanied by rapid rhythmical punctuations before yielding to a contrasting lyrical section with long, flowing lines and many opportunities for expressive playing. Chorus Angelorum
This poignant and moving work musically tells the tale of a chorus of angels (chorus angelorum) as they accompany two souls to the next world. Drums of the Saamis
Drums of the Saamis was commissioned by the Medicine Hat Concert Band Society of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. The piece chronicles the merger of the First Nation (first natives) and modern Albertan cultures. The opening tribal drums followed by the haunting melody simulating the traditional wooden flute comprise two themes that are the foundation for the entire piece. Both elements are developed, varied and enhanced throughout as the listener senses the increasing influence of modern day Alberta through the use of modern sounding chords and rhythms. By the end, the marriage of the old and the new is complete. This powerful work closes as it began; a restatement of themes representing the musical and historical foundation of the region.
