Currents
The term current is defined as a steady flow of water, air or electricity in a particular direction. Whatever form the current takes, it is a fascinating source of energy that supports, yet challenges mankind in multiple ways. The composition “Currents” by Robert W. Smith takes its inspiration by the various forms of energy used in the art of music and in music education. Unpredictable, yet constantly flowing, the interacting musical lines of energy provide a unique experience for both performer and listener alike.SKU: AL24757 -

Drums of the Saamis
Drums of the Saamis was commissioned by the Medicine Hat Concert Band Society of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. The piece chronicles the merger of the First Nation (first natives) and modern Albertan cultures. The opening tribal drums followed by the haunting melody simulating the traditional wooden flute comprise two themes that are the foundation for the entire piece. Both elements are developed, varied and enhanced throughout as the listener senses the increasing influence of modern day Alberta through the use of modern sounding chords and rhythms. By the end, the marriage of the old and the new is complete. This powerful work closes as it began; a restatement of themes representing the musical and historical foundation of the region. Hawkeye Festival Overture
Hawkeye Festival Overture begins with a bright opening fanfare which leads to a rhythmic Allegro section. An Andante section in 3/4 time features a lyric trumpet solo and numerous harmonic suspensions. A driving percussion interlude in 5/4 with a gradual pyramid that builds in the winds leads to a return of the Allegro. The work ends with a powerful re-statement of the syncopated 5/4 motives and finishes with a flourish. This very appealing work is well-suited for developing concert bands and should provide excellent opportunities for studies in general musicianship, intonation and rhythmic precision.SKU: AL23315
