Symphonic Portrait (based on Our Director)
F. E. Bigelow composed Our Director in 1892, and in the decades that followed it became widely used in such diverse settings as silent films, vaudeville, World War I, and adapted as college fight songs and alma maters (e.g. Harvard, Rice and Furman). Michael’s impressive setting for band opens with a noble introduction leading to hints of Bigelow’s trio theme. This theme is alternated with an original theme until both appear gloriously at the maestoso. Dedicated to Furman’s Director Emeritus of Bands, Dan Atkins Ellis (1929-2007). Symphony No. 9 “New World”, Finale
This surprisingly accurate, yet playable Dvorák transcription will enhance any program. Great pains were taken to keep this transcription pure, and the result is a wonderfully written version of one of the orchestral repertoire’s most popularly performed pieces. To further enhance the performance experience, the key has been changed from E minor to the more band-friendly key of F minor. Essential parts are cued, making this adaptation usable by bands with limited instrumentation. Give your audience the “new world” on your next concert!

The Bare Necessities
First heard in the original 1967 movie, this familiar tune is featured again in the blockbuster 2016 version. In this clever arrangement for band, Paul Murtha uses a peppy 2-beat style and starts out with the trombones on the melody. Every section of the band gets into the act, however, including a solo or soli for tuba, and a brief slower section for a Dixieland combo leading to the rousing finish.
