Moravian Folk Rhapsody
This work for band is a setting of several delightful Moravian folk dances. “Stoji hruska v oudoli” is a fast-paced two-step dance. “Rozluc se Ancicko” features a clarinet solo in a mournful, yet lilting, slow 6/8 melody. “Preskoda nastokrat” is a highly rhythmic piece in a moderate tempo that features a brief double reed/piccolo section. “Ma zlata maticka” begins with an unaccompanied alto saxophone solo, then includes a folk dance that begins slowly and increases in tempo. “Vojaci jedou” is a proud and uplifting march in 3/4 time. “U Kláštera pole” ends the rhapsody with a lively 2/4 dance that builds to a rousing conclusion. Performers and audiences alike will enjoy the wonderful colors and tonality of this charming music from the Czech Republic. (9:20)SKU: AL22280 -

Mountain Thyme (A Setting of “The Braes of Balquhidder”)
Written as a memorial, this beautifully emotional setting is a reworking of the traditional folk song “The Braes of Baquhidder” (also known as “Wild Mountain Thyme”) by Scottish writer Robert Tannahill. Samuel Hazo uses a varied tapestry of colors, textures and dynamics, taking full advantage of the depth and power of the modern wind band in creating this stunningly effective work. New Mexico March
One of Sousa’s more obscure marches, it was dedicated to the governor and the people of New Mexico. You’ll hear the characteristic musical sounds of Latin and American Indian populations indigenous to New Mexico at the time. Typical of the march king, you’ll be impressed with the interesting musical turns. (2:55)SKU: ALBDM03001 -

Night in the Tropics
Grab your suitcase and get ready to spend a Night in the Tropics! Composed in Guadeloupe in 1859, it was written to be performed by combined symphony orchestra and large band, with improvisational parts for many local percussionists. This arrangement of the second movement is based on original manuscripts found in the New York Public Library. Great fun!SKU: AL20269 -

Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (March)
Now with a full score provided, here’s the original Fennell arrangement of this revered John Philip Sousa march. Although there was always a harp included in the photographs of the Sousa Band, this is the only march in his repertoire that includes a part for the harpist. The part is included and can be played on a synthesizer. This one’s a real barn burner. (3:20)SKU: ALBDM04013 -

Northwoods: Of Might and Mettle
This is a musical depiction of the day of a lumberjack in the late 1800s during the great logging drives in Wisconsin. The work begins with “Daylight in the Swamp,” a mysterious setting reminiscent of the early morning conditions. It then transitions to “Waking the Camp” and develops to “Felling the Trees,” a very dynamic segment. “The Ice Breaks” and “On the River” draw the composition to a serious conclusion. A most creative work. This is Robert W. Smith at his very best. (6:46)SKU: ALBDM02036 -

O Waly Waly (A Rhapsody for Band)
Dating from the 1600s, the folk song “O Waly, Waly” (commonly known as “The Water is Wide”) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-note motif common to this song and also “Carolina” (South Caroline’s official song) is developed. This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic flavored Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestoso section for the entire ensemble. A creative and dynamic work for contest or festival! Dur: 5:00SKU: HL04003069 -
