Rephrygeration
A dynamic concert opener or closer cast almost entirely in the Phrygian mode. The half steps that make this scale mode so unique are celebrated both in a melodic and harmonic sense, with aggressive low brass figures, crisp and rhythmic percussion, and winding passages in the woodwind. Rhythm of the Winds
What a great interplay of rhythms! History will remember this work as one of the most played concert and contest pieces of all time. The alternation of two rhythms—one syncopated and the other an after-beat pattern—form the rhythmic foundation for the work’s theme. This rhythmic pattern has become a staple for many contemporary band compositions. It’s just as classy as it is classic! (5:15)SKU: ALBD00366 -

Scherzo: Cat and Mouse
The “cat and mouse chase” has been a part of folklore and popular culture since the time of pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Over the ages, the chase has served as a metaphor for the suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted. In the modern age, the story has been played out hundreds of times in popular animated cartoons, often accompanied by a musical score representing the energetic spirit of the chase with lively twists and turns, sudden surprises and tongue-in-cheek music. In this spirit of playfulness and suspense, Robert Spittal has created a marvelous work that is both entertaining and exhilarating. Dur: 6:30 (Grade 4)Recorded by the University of North Texas Wind Symphony – Eugene Migliaro Corporon, conductor
“This entertaining work effectively conveys the playfulness and suspense of the cat and mouse chase. Creatively scored in a driving 3/4 time with contrasting textures, rhythmic variety, brisk passages…and melodic and harmonic interest throughout.”–The Instrumentalist
