Elegy for Albinoni
Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) was a prolific Baroque-era composer whose works are now rarely performed. However, he was much admired by J.S. Bach who used examples of Albinoni’s music in his teaching, and also used themes written by Albinoni as the basis for some of his own pieces. Elegy for Albinoni, a beautiful memorial piece in honor of this musical master, uses a romantic tone to set the stage for a theme based on one of Albinoni’s violin sonatas. A rewarding work! Excerpts from The Rite of Spring
The premier performance of The Rite of Spring in 1913 is the stuff of legend. There was disagreement among the people who attendedas to whether it was the music or the choreography that caused the near-riot in the audience. Since then The Rite has been performed regularly and is considered to be one of the most influential works of the 20th century, laying the basis for modern jazz, film music and even heavy metal. It’s all here: the driving rhythms, haunting Russian folk melodies, brilliant scoring, crunching harmonies and the epic drama! The intention with this arrangement for band was to stay as true as possible to the original and choose the sections that would work well in this context. Sure to become a valued and important addition to the wind band repertoire! Dur: 6:30SKU: HL04004206 -

Fantasy on “Yankee Doodle”
This is a refreshing and exciting work! Yankee Doodle seems like such a simple melody, but it’s amazing how well Mark Williams develops it using a set of variations. Although opened by a humorous statement of the theme by solo tuba, you’ll soon find that this is not a novelty piece . . . the varied styles and moods are displayed in well-written music that is perfectly held together by the original theme. Fantasy Sketches
Drawing inspiration from books and films of fantasy adventure, Johnnie’s three-movement suite explores a variety of descriptive moods and styles. The first movement (Wizards) has a noble and grand flavor, while the second (Elves) is more playful and mischievous in design. The concluding movement (Talking Animals) uses rhythmic energy and mixed meters in creating a bit of a rambunctious setting. Themes from the earlier movements are then brought back for the grand finale. Dur: 8:00

Finale from Symphony No. 5
The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven. While the first movement of his famous fifth symphony is more often performed, the majestic and triumphant finale beautifully exemplifies the craftsmanship and genius of one of the greatest composers of all time. Slightly truncated in form, this masterful adaptation for concert band still retains the thematic material, power, and excitement found in the original. (MusicWorks)SKU: HLPC22865 -

Flashpoint
Right from the beginning, this dynamic overture explodes with intensity and rhythmic drive. Commissioned by District 8 of the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association, John Moss uses angular melodies and biting ensemble punctuations to provide grit and character to this tour de force for wind band. For contrast, a slow middle section features rich harmonies and sonorous melodies before a reprise of the opening dynamic themes. Throughout the work an active percussion score supports and augments the overall dramatic effect. Dur: 6:15SKU: HL04002647
