Star-Rise
Star-Rise is a programmatic work depicting the progress of the stars across the night sky. Bells set the tone with a simple three-note melody as twilight falls and the first stars appear. Percussion effects represent crickets and cicadas chirping in the background. The texture becomes more chorale-like as related but distinct themes reveal themselves, representing rising constellations. As the star themes gently roll by, the harmony grows warmer and the melody becomes more grandiose in preparation for the final star-rise: the arrival of the morning sun.“The work is a great exercise in part layering.”

Starburst (Digital)
Starburst is a rousing overture that explodes with energy and effervescence. The idea of a starburst pattern (something bursting forth from a central source) inspired the composer to create a concert opener full of joy and excitement for all members of the band as well as the audience. The work is built on three elements: an opening flourish built on 4ths; a lively theme that uses chromaticism; and a brassy fanfare that develops into a fugue. These building blocks are developed throughout, with dynamic contrasts and a relentless drive. Commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band in honor of Douglas Macaulay’s 20th anniversary as music director, Starburst is a salute to the energy and inspiration of this fine musician. Stardance
The opening of this unique and masterful work for band places the wind players out in the audience as the listeners are surrounded by the effect of a swirling dance of celestial lights and sounds. Onstage, the percussion section introduces a driving ostinato pattern later picked up by the entire ensemble. A delicate and beautiful middle section almost suspends time as soloists provide a bluesy interaction with the rich background texture and each other.
