For Heaven and the Future
The title of this expansive work from Samuel Hazo draws inspiration from a Robert Frost poem, and the thematic material is a creative interpretation of the English folk song Seventeen Come Sunday. Differing from Vaughan Williams’ treatment of the same tune in English Folk Song Suite, this setting remains at a slow tempo throughout and undergoes a myriad of changes through use of harmonic and textural variations. Beautifully and effectively paced with key impact points at just the right moments. Dur: 5:00SKU: HL04004767 -

Forever Free (Fanfare-Overture for Band)
Commissioned to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the state of West Virginia, Forever Free incorporates indigenous elements of the state’s musical heritage, capturing a robust and celebratory spirit. Cast in a single movement in three sections, the title is inspired by the state motto, “Montani semper liberi” (“Mountaineeers forever free”). The work is unified at the outset and closing by a ceremonial fanfare that is based on thematic figures from the state song West Virginia Hills. A contrasting middle section features a lyric variant accompanied by a militaristic snare drum and timpani cadence, before all thematic elements are combined for the buoyant and festive conclusion. Frederick’s Black Devils (March of the First Special Service Force)
Concert Band, Concert Band Grade: 4Frederick’s Black Devils (March of the First Special Service Force)
During World War II, Winston Churchill initiated the formation of Special Force Commando Units that would prove so effective as to change the course of the war. The First Special Service Force, led by their intrepid colonel, Robert T. Frederick, was perhaps the most famous of these units. Due to their ferocious nature and blackened faces for night raids, the fearful Germans gave them the nickname “The Black Devils.” In 2015 they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor the U.S. government can bestow. Frederick’s Black Devils is a stirring concert march that pays tribute to this legendary unit.SKU: HL04004793 -

Free Running
Free Running is an exciting, high velocity tour-de-force that will keep both musicians and the audience on the edge of their seats. Inspiration for the work came from the pointillistic paintings of Seurat (who created images by using tiny spots of primary colors on his canvas) and from Parkour, a form of urban acrobatics in which participants, known as free runners, use the structures of the rural landscape to perform catlike leaps and sprints. The resulting creation is a non-stop piece of music made up of only staccato notes in a constant rhythm moving through different sections of the ensemble. Free Running was commissioned by the Troy University Symphony Band for the 2011 Alabama Music Educators Association Convention. Ideal for concert or festival use, it is guaranteed to leave the audience breathless! Dur: 5:10Recorded by the Troy University Symphony Band – Ralph Ford, conductor
