Hack Attack
Keep those hackers and slackers engaged with this bluesy rock original. The flatted 3rds and 7ths add the blues flavor, and it shifts between the major and minor mode, but that won’t be any problem since they’ll be begging to practice this one. Victor López has shared information from his ‘international research team’ on the topic and the result is this charismatic original work for your beginners. Right in the pocket! (1:45)SKU: AL39506 -

Hail the Champions
Commissioned for the University of Akron Symphonic Band, this dynamic work celebrates 100 years of music composed for the Olympic Games. Based on three primary themes, the first is a brilliant fanfare that serves as an introduction as well as a unifying link throughout. Second is the 1896 Olympic Hymn (music by Spyros Samaras) set in a beautiful lyric style which builds to a magnificent climax juxtaposed with the opening fanfare. The final section presents a new version of Mr. Curnow’s own Olympic Fanfare and Theme for the Olympic Flag which was commissioned for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and performed again in 2000. The dramatic closing is again combined with elements of the opening fanfare. Dur: c. 6:40(Recorded by the University of Akron Symphony Band – Dr. Galen S. Karriker, Director of Bands. Premiere performance conducted by James Curnow)

Half Moon on the Hudson
Nearly 400 years ago (in 1609) Henry Hudson and his ship, the Half Moon, explored the majestic river that was later to bear his name. Half Moon on the Hudson pays tribute to this area of New York and the spirit of exploration and adventure. A regal fanfare announces the beginning of the work, followed by an energetic and rhythmic section that features various sections of the band answering one another. An emotional and chorale-like middle section provides a calmer mood along with lush harmonizations. The brass and percussion sections herald the final segment, driving to a dramatic conclusion of this rewarding work for winds. Dur: 6:30 (Includes full performance CD)SKU: HL04002551 -

Hampshire March
Based on the original opening of the original introduction for Second Suite in F for Military Band, Holst replaced this section with the now-familiar morris dance tune, “Glory Shears.” The 38-measure passage (crossed out in the autograph score) draws upon the English folk song, “Young Reilly,” and presents an alluring work in itself for younger players. Handel in the Strand
This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger’s original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger’s “four-some” edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the “room music” quality of the original shines through in this skillful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen.
