Nurture
“There are some people for whom the act of nurturing is innate. The work they do is often unheralded, acknowledgement of their effort the last thing on their mind. But nurturers carry pain, too. Their own burdens, anxieties and hardships often take a back seatto that nurturing impulse. This piece is a meditation on that idea; that some people, not without their own deep personal obstacles, can’t help but live out the powerful instinct to hold those around them in a warm embrace of care.” ~Edward Fairlie Dur: 4:50 (Recorded by the Eltham High School Symphonic Band, directed by Rick Plummer, guest conductor Edward Fairlie)SKU: HL48024110 -

O Waly Waly (A Rhapsody for Band)
Dating from the 1600s, the folk song “O Waly, Waly” (commonly known as “The Water is Wide”) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-note motif common to this song and also “Carolina” (South Caroline’s official song) is developed. This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic flavored Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestoso section for the entire ensemble. A creative and dynamic work for contest or festival! Dur: 5:00SKU: HL04003069 -

Of Gale Force Winds
The turbulence and intensity of a major wind storm is effectively recreated in Richard Saucedo’s Of Gale Force Winds. Based around rhythmic figures that create a wind-like effect, and combined with a playful melody, the piece alternates between 6/8 and 9/8 staying rhythmically dynamic throughout. A very brief moment of repose hints at the period of calm that comes in the middle or “eye” of bigger storms. The fury of the storm then returns with darker sonorities and increased energy as this descriptive work comes to an exciting conclusion. Dur: 4:00SKU: HL04003788 -
