Scenes from The Nutcracker
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the ballet The Nutcracker in 1891–1892. Based on Alexandre Dumas’ adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffmann’s story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” Before the premiere, Tchaikovsky selected eight pieces from the ballet and created The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, which became an immediate success and contains some of the most recognizable and best-loved holiday music. “Scenes from The Nutcracker” contains four numbers from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a.SKU: AL32511 -

Scherzo: Cat and Mouse
The “cat and mouse chase” has been a part of folklore and popular culture since the time of pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Over the ages, the chase has served as a metaphor for the suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted. In the modern age, the story has been played out hundreds of times in popular animated cartoons, often accompanied by a musical score representing the energetic spirit of the chase with lively twists and turns, sudden surprises and tongue-in-cheek music. In this spirit of playfulness and suspense, Robert Spittal has created a marvelous work that is both entertaining and exhilarating. Dur: 6:30 (Grade 4)Recorded by the University of North Texas Wind Symphony – Eugene Migliaro Corporon, conductor
“This entertaining work effectively conveys the playfulness and suspense of the cat and mouse chase. Creatively scored in a driving 3/4 time with contrasting textures, rhythmic variety, brisk passages…and melodic and harmonic interest throughout.”–The Instrumentalist

Scramble
A rousing concert opener or closer, “Scramble” is intended to aurally depict two characteristics of its title—collecting things together in a disorderly way, and moving quickly with a sense of urgency. The theme and its harmonic structure are presented at the beginning, and its musical “parts” are imaginatively separated and combined in unique and haphazard combinations throughout the piece, all at a frantic pace. Searching for Lost Dreams
“As I began this piece, it was as though I were entering a dream. The music was atmospheric, undefined, and somewhat disorienting. Gradually the material became more focused, but just in time to switch to a very different–though related–sound world, which became the second movement. The overall poignancy, varied sound worlds and dramatic shape of the music suggested the title.” ~Dana Wilson Dur: 8:00 (Recorded by the North Texas Wind Symphony, Jacqueline Townsend, conductor)SKU: HL48024108 -

Seconds Out
In boxing, the term “seconds out” refers to the moment when coaches and trainers (or seconds) must be out of the ring, leaving the competitors alone to face the competition. In a similar vein, this composition provides a musical description of the challenges and triumphs of students as they transition from middle to high school, leaving their “seconds” (parents, mentors, etc.) behind to face life on their own terms. Featuring a strong sense of urgency throughout, Seconds Out is solidly written for inexperienced ensembles with plenty of tutti scoring, and interspersed with sections of contrasting dynamics and effective percussion writing.
