Chelsea Bridge
The brilliant composer/arranger Billly Strayhorn created this gorgeous melody and lush arrangement—this is the authentic version by Strayhorn himself. Recorded by Duke Ellington, the suggested tempo is a medium swing around 96 BPM. Features include a tenor 2 melody bridge solo, tenor 1 has a clarinet double, a sax section soli, a trombone 3 melody solo, and lead trumpet range is to written high C above the staff. (4:10)

Composed by the legendary Billy Strayhorn, this is truly one of the masterpieces of jazz. Mark Taylor has beautifully crafted a feature for alto sax using a variety of styles and settings. Basically scored as a ballad, there is a jazz waltz section in the middle. This is followed by a powerful slow swing ensemble shout before returning to the soloist to finish out the chart in the original ballad style. Pentonsilic
One of Strayhorns finest works, Billy’s original score of “Pentonsilic” has been edited by Jeff Lindberg. The tempo is bright at 208 BPM and there is clarinet on the tenor 1 part to include solo space. Add a very nice written bari sax solo, a few meter changes, and you’ve got an a meaty arrangement at a high level. A brilliant and creative orchestration.

Think of Take the “A” Train with a contemporary flair and you have the idea behind this inventive chart by Alan Baylock. Opening up in a swing groove, then alternating with a funk feel, bari sax, bass ‘bone, guitar and bass have the initial melodic statement in this terrific chart.
