A Jamestown Trilogy
A Jamestown Trilogy is a three-movement suite inspired by the story of Captain John Smith and his crew, who sailed from England on December 20, 1606 in three small ships, the Discovery, Susan Constant and Godspeed. They first landed at Cape Henry on April 26, 1607 and then sailed up the James River where, on May 14, 1607, they landed on a site they named Jamestown. In 1608, Smith was captured by the Powhatan Indians. Legend has it that he was considered a threat to the Indians because of his interest in metals and in searching for a waterway west. Smith was sentenced to death and placed on a stone alter to be killed when a twelve year old Indian Princess rescued him. Matoaka, nicknamed Pocahontas (Playful One), the daughter of Powhatan, chief of the confederacy, threw her body across Smith’s and saved his life.

Alchemy
Alchemy is an ancient philosophy that sought to turn iron into gold. The composer saw a parallel in music: taking the notes of a scale and turning them into music seems just as magical. The notes are like iron and the process of turning them into music makes them as precious as gold.SKU: AL46654 -

Algorhythms
An algorithm is a procedure for solving a mathematical problem in a finite number of steps that frequently involves repetition of an operation. Algorithms are frequently used in programming sequences in computers. The driving rhythms and mathematical “feel” of Algorhythms lends a “digital” quality to the piece, one that will quickly become a favorite for players and the audience. (3:45)SKU: AL26819 -

Clarinets Packing Up Early
This novelty piece in rondo form features the clarinet section removing one section of their instrument at a time. As the piece progresses, the instruments become smaller and smaller until the main theme they carry is totally absent from the accompaniment part played by the rest of the ensemble. The creative possibilities with this piece are limited only to the director’s imagination! (2:10)SKU: AL41945 -

Daydreaming
“Daydreaming” is a short, lighthearted tone poem with a very simple lyrical quality reflecting a behavior most of us exhibit from time to time. The melodic theme occurred to the composer as he was sitting in his studio looking out the window and doing what the title suggests he was doing. (2:15)“A lighthearted piece ideal for first-year concert programming!”

This spirited composition for concert band is inspired by Mill Mountain, which is located on the outskirts of Roanoke, VA and provides a wonderful elevated view of both the city of Roanoke and the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Of particular interest, the mountaintop contains a structure known as the Mill Mountain Star, the world’s largest freestanding illuminated man-made star, visible for 60 miles from the air and 1,045 feet above the city of Roanoke. Nemesis
The dictionary defines the word “nemesis” as: 1. goddess of divine retribution; 2. one that inflicts retribution or vengeance; 3. a formidable and usually victorious rival. This piece was written to convey the sense of the definition. Although the piece begins serenely, it soon ventures into a driving storm of contemporary rhythms and harmonies that continues until the end of the piece. Paradiddles
Percussionists must learn both the rudiments and the scales. This piece provides the wind players some exposure to the rudiments. “Paradiddles” creates patterns played by the winds that mimic two types of paradiddles—the single paradiddle and the double paradiddle. This may be the first piece for concert band inspired by, and based on, percussion rudiments. (5:50)SKU: AL44207 -
