Two Chinese Folk Songs
The two folk songs in this arrangement are contrasting in style but they both share the characteristic pentatonic scale that is a staple of Chinese and other Asian cultures. Jasmine Flower musically portrays the lovely scent and beauty of the flower that is often worn in the hair of Asian women. Feng Yang Ge is a much livelier song that combines the pentatonic scale with syncopated rhythms. “Feng Yang” is a region in the Anhui Province of China and “Ge” means song. Correlates with Book 1. Two English Dances
This refreshing work features a superb arrangement of two well-known English themes: ‘Shepherd’s Hey’ and ‘Country Gardens.’ It’s an enjoyable selection for maturing young bands who need extra practice in playing slurred notes, precise staccato articulation and dotted eighth– sixteenth-note rhythms. Wind Storm
In early December 2011, a powerful wind storm passed through Southern California, leaving thousands without electricity and severe damage to many mature trees. Written during this event, this piece uses sharply syncopated rhythms, the key of C minor and prominent percussion to convey the mood that prevailed during the storm. As is always the case, calm, clear weather returned and the lyrical slow section in E-flat major brings that to mind. Accent on Achievement users will recognize the chorale in bars 49–56 as a variation of the B-flat chorale that appears on page 44 of Book 1. (3:45)SKU: AL37783
