Cathedrals
Named the 2008 winner of the prestigious Frederick Fennell Prize for young composers (sponsored by ASCAP and CBDNA), Cathedrals by Kathryn Salfelder is a fantasy on Gabrieli’s Canzon Primi Toni from the “Sacrae Symphoniae,” which dates from 1597. The work is an ingenious synthesis of old and new, evoking the mystery and allure of Renaissance spatial music through the use of two brass choirs, and intertwined with a rich color palette, modal harmonies, and a variety of woodwind and percussion textures. A stunning addition to the wind band repertoire. Dur: 6:00 (Artist Level – Grade 5)Audio recording is a reading by the New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble; Charles Peltz, conductor

Crossing Parallels
Following the success of Kathryn’s Cathedrals (2009), the American Bandmasters Association commissioned her to create this new work for band. Premiered at the 2010 ABA National Convention, Crossing Parallels offers a creative tapestry of engaging sounds and textures as it combines elements of Renaissance and Baroque musical gestures with contemporary notions of set theory and harmony. The seemingly contradictory nature of the title is reflected in the overlapping and intertwining of thematic ideas vying for attention. Dur: 7:00SKU: HL48021141 -

Reminiscence
Composed for the commission project celebrating the 85th birthday of legendary conductor Frank Battisti, this beautiful lyric piece from Kathryn Salfelder offers a rewarding emotional depth for young bands. Evoking feelings of nostalgia, yearning and growth, some of the moments are peaceful while others are full of angst. The music evolves from a tone row provided by Mr. Battisti himself and features shifting tonal textures, ranging from lush full band passages to lighter soloistic passages.Recorded by the New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble – Charles Peltz, conductor.
