This piece is based entirely upon Pérotin’s “Viderunt Omnes.” A member of the Notre Dame School, Pérotin was a pioneer in three- and four-voice polyphony. “Viderunt Omnes” is one of the few remaining pieces of organum quadruplum known to exist. “Medieval Fanfare and Chant” alternates between the literal presentation of the music and a more contemporary setting of the themes, going back and forth until the final grandiose statement.

Just as the title suggests, this piece is a musical depiction of wild uproar or unrestrained disorder; tumult or chaos. Complete with hammered brake drum, the piece is a real attention-getter. Out of pandemonium blooms music! (1:30)

A pentagram is a five-sided star that has been a symbol believed to contain supernatural or spiritual properties. There’s nothing supernatural about this tremendous introduction or reinforcement of 5/4 time for your developing band. Cast in a bold overture style, your students are able to easily grasp the time signature. Featuring a variety of styles and textures, this dynamic composition builds to a bold punctuated conclusion. A Plaza de Toros is an arena where bullfights occur. As the bullfighters enter the stadium, they are usually accompanied by Spanish marches called “paso dobles,” literally meaning “double step.” This energetic Michael Story composition, scored in common time easing your rehearsal, will bring the vibrant sound of the bullfight arena to your beginning band. Opening with a regal fanfare-like statement that musically demonstrates the wonder of the ancient Aztec structure that inspired this piece, the original work develops through a series of contemporary musical vignettes building to an epic conclusion.
