Squonk Blues (Mythical Forest Creature)
This quirky, spirited piece is in the style of a blues waltz and based on the mythical legend of the squonk, a forest creature that dissolves into a pool of tears when it is cornered. However, on dark moonless nights when no one is about, they gather together to sing and dance the Squonk Blues! A unique change of pace, this composition uses the first six notes of the B-flat scale.SKU: HL04004733 -

Starburst (Digital)
Starburst is a rousing overture that explodes with energy and effervescence. The idea of a starburst pattern (something bursting forth from a central source) inspired the composer to create a concert opener full of joy and excitement for all members of the band as well as the audience. The work is built on three elements: an opening flourish built on 4ths; a lively theme that uses chromaticism; and a brassy fanfare that develops into a fugue. These building blocks are developed throughout, with dynamic contrasts and a relentless drive. Commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band in honor of Douglas Macaulay’s 20th anniversary as music director, Starburst is a salute to the energy and inspiration of this fine musician. The Gathering of Eagles
From a song shared by Squamish First Nation artist and performer Bob Baker, comes a creative work for concert band shaped by Robert Buckley that will allow your students to experience the music of one of North America’s First Peoples. The Gathering of Eagles flows from a beautiful pentatonic melody and grows into a work that is both reverent and exciting. Dur: 4:05SKU: HL04005515 -

The Knights’ Creed
The medieval knights had a code of chivalry that included courage, community and wisdom – in this composition each of these ideals is symbolized with its own melody. The percussion provides the framework as these melodies are stated individually, in pairs and ultimately all together in a triumphant conclusion. This work is an ideal high-energy concert opener or festival piece that showcases all sections of the band and allows them each to play the melody. Dur: 5:10SKU: HL04005435 -

The Legend of Billy Miner
This composition reflects a colorful time in American history and is an opportunity for your band to discover ragtime rhythms. Folk hero Billy Miner (the Grey Fox) was the last of the old-time bandits. He was noted for his unusual politeness and is believed to be the originator of the phrase, “Hands up!” This composition is like a mini movie score and starts with the Billy Miner ragtime theme, followed by a train robbery, his capture, and final release. The artful interplay between sections gives this piece the sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced work. Dur: 3:35SKU: HL04005509 -

Undercurrents
Undercurrents provides an electrifying, virtuosic showcase for the whole ensemble – featuring a series of solos, duets and trios, as well as highlighting the various chamber sections within the band. The music was inspired by watching schools of fish and flocks of birds perpetually moving with the ocean currents and air currents. Every once in a while a single solo shape will appear – or two or three – they dance apart for a moment and then are drawn back into the ensemble. Commissioned by the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy, Victoria, BC, this is a powerful tour-de-force from beginning to end. Dur: c. 6:30SKU: HL04004646 -

Walking to the Sky
Walking to the Sky takes an epic, cinematic approach to celebrate humankind’s collective quest for wisdom and transcendence. It was inspired by a 100-foot Jonathan Borofsky sculpture, which creates the illusion of a group of people walking skyward into infinity. With pulsing percussion, heroic brass, haunting melodies, sudden shifts in dynamics and dramatic key changes, everyone in the ensemble gets a chance to star in this exciting mini-movie score. To add even more grandeur, there is an optional choir part (that could be played on a synthesizer). Dur: 3:45SKU: HL04004590 -

Where Mountains Touch the Sky
With sensitive scoring and use of colors and textures, this descriptive piece sounds more advanced and sophisticated than its grade level would suggest. Where Mountains Touch the Sky is a tone poem inspired by springtime in the alpine meadows of British Columbia. While the lofty peaks are still covered with snow, the rivers are flowing and the meadows are coming alive with wildflowers. This lyrical work begins quietly and peacefully, building steadily to a soaring climax before returning to a soft and reverent conclusion. Dur: 3:00SKU: HL04003742 -

Wild Rose Jamboree
Wild Rose Jamboree conjures up the pioneer spirit and the big-sky panorama of Alberta, Canada’s heartland. The cinematic approach to the music captures the essence of life in “wild rose country” – famous for its rodeos, warm-hearted people, majestic mountains and wide-open spaces. With a high-spirited hoedown and a rich, reverent theme that features a trumpet solo and a flute/clarinet duet, this composition could be a dynamic show opener or festival piece. Wild Rose Jamboree can be effectively performed by a mixed group (junior band and senior band, for example), the upper parts being at a medium level and the lower parts (flute 2, clarinet 3, alto saxophone 2, trumpet 3, horn 2 and trombone 2) at an easier level. Windjammer (Voyage Aboard a Tall Ship)
Windjammers were the last of the great sailing tall ships, and this piece from the pen of Robert Buckley captures the majesty and excitement of these amazing vessels. The voyage begins announced by three solo trumpets surrounding the audience and bouncing musical phrases off one another. The sails are raised, the ship is underway, and the audience is taken on a colorful and exciting musical voyage. This is effective and skillfully scored programmatic music at its best.
