Where the Black Hawk Soars
After a majestic fanfare, a soaring melodic line appears, reminiscent of the flight of a hawk. With limitless freedom, the winged creature is master of all it surveys. The presence of the wind can be detected throughout as it carries our musical subject to new heights. A major new work by one of our generation’s most successful composers. (5:55)

Whirligigs
This attractive suite of three concise movements depicts various types of “whirligig” contraptions, or “wind-toys” which were popular in Europe as early as the 16th century. Marching Soldier features an optional “marching machine” creating the effect of soldiers on parade, while Flower Lady depicts a figure in constant fluid motion moving up and down while picking flowers. The concluding movement, The Flying Horse, describes a very active whirligig with moving feet and flapping wings. A unique and descriptive programming option for young players. Whisper to Their Souls (based on “Greensleeves”)
Here is a unique and creative setting of the familiar tune Greensleeves (What Child Is This?) that opens with the melody scored softly for the woodwinds. The full ensemble contributes a series of harmonically rich phrases until the work reaches an emotional climax at the powerfully scored key change. Another Gordon Goodwin work of art. Commissioned by New Trier High School, Jim Warrick, director, this is sort of a bluesy-swing chart with a huge shout chorus.
