Der Erlkönig
Der Erlkönig, or “The Elf King,” is based on Johann Goethe’s late 18th-century poem of the same name in which a father and his young son ride home on horseback one dark and eerie night. The father tries to calm the increasingly fearful son by explaining everything the boy reports as simply leaves rustling in the wind or willows moving in the fog. Nonetheless, the father rides faster and faster home only to find the boy is dead in his arms when they arrive. Goethe’s dark and gothic tale is brought to spine-tingling life in this harrowing, fast-paced tone poem for band. (3:20)SKU: AL44161 -

Literally translated, the title “The Salute” was commissioned and dedicated to a band director of the same name. This original work opens with an expressive regal musical statement and develops into a driving, energetic frenzy initiated by the percussion section and followed by the entire ensemble. Utilizing subtle multi-meter and shifting pulse to enhance the excitement throughout, the work finishes with a suitably dramatic conclusion. Destino Re-Immaginare (A Fantasy on Motifs of G. Verdi)
The overture to Giuseppe Verdi’s 1862 opera La Forza del Destino (The Power of Fate) has remained standard repertoire for orchestras around the world. In this imaginative work for winds, Jay Bocook pays homage to the mastery of Verdi and begins with the ominous 3-note “fate” theme from the overture. Throughout the piece melodies are recast and harmonies are embellished, culminating in an exhilarating conclusion where the final seven bars quote Verdi’s original almost identically. A brilliant addition to the wind band repertoire.SKU: HL04006124 -

Dillon’s Flight
“Dillon’s Flight” was inspired by the legend of the Phoenix, a bird of fire that does not lay eggs, has no younglings, was here at the beginning of time, and yet still lives today in a hidden desert land. Every 500 years, the sun burns down on the Phoenix until a flash of light appears and it becomes consumed by the flames of fire. From the pile of silvery-gray ash rises up a young Phoenix. The young Phoenix then takes flight and sings its glorious song to the sun for another five hundred years. Dedicated to the Dillon School in Phoenix, New York, this musical depiction is jam-packed with energy. (5:07)SKU: AL29603 -
