Hit the Ground Running
It’s funky with all the Big Phat Band attributes, and it’s fairly tough to play, but hey, it’s Gordon and you know it will be a hot chart . . . if you have the horses. The opening lick for piano is really hot. The rhythm section will stay busy and it includes an auxiliary percussion part. Solo space is for alto, tenor, bari, trumpet and trombone. Open with this chart! (4:55)SKU: AL30653 -

Hunting Wabbits 2 (A Bad Hare Day)
Challenging, yes, impossible, no. Gordon Goodwin’s Hunting Wabbits 2 will provide all the challenge any band needs as they explore this tongue-in-cheek musical adventure that is well worth the effort. The groove is straight eighths (semi-legit) and funky. The instrumentation is flexible: saxophone parts with woodwind doubles, sax parts without doubles, and even optional string parts . . . yes, strings! Percussion parts included. Solo space for all saxes, trumpet 4 and trombones 1/2. As recorded by Gordon Goodwin on The Phat Pack CD. This is an amazing arrangement!SKU: AL26891 -

Jeep’s Blues
Jeep’s Blues is one of many blues lines written by Ellington’s star alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges. This one was for an Ellington small group recording under Hodges’ name in the late 1930’s. It’s basically just the first 4 bars of the blues and then Hodges improvises the rest of the 12-bar form. Ellington’s later big band arrangement is a very simple enlargement of that original 4-horn chart. There are 2 ensemble choruses, 2 solo choruses, 2 sax section choruses ending with a stride piano cadence. The opening is a loud and glorious ensemble; the closing is a soft and introspective sax section.SKU: AL30561 -

Moon over Cuba
Juan Tizol’s Moon Over Cuba started life with the title of Puerto Rican Girl. Although the copyright date is 1939, the only performance of this piece is the Victor recording from 1941. This obscure piece never achieved the mild popularity of Ellington’s other 2 Latin masterpieces of that era- Conga Brava and Flaming Sword, but don’t sell this gem short just because you never heard of it.SKU: AL30562 -

Movin’ Uptown
Although Movin’ Uptown has some technical difficulties (range and tempo), it shouldn’t present too much of a musical challenge for your students. The style and content are very similar to a number of Sammy Nest pieces that high school and college bands regularly perform. Since this is an up-tempo flag-waver, Benny Carter chose to use a 64-bar AABA song form instead of the usual 32, which keeps each chorus at a length of one minute. Each A section consists of and a and a b, and the B section also are split in 2 8-bar sections.SKU: AL30565 -

Pentonsilic
One of Strayhorns finest works, Billy’s original score of “Pentonsilic” has been edited by Jeff Lindberg. The tempo is bright at 208 BPM and there is clarinet on the tenor 1 part to include solo space. Add a very nice written bari sax solo, a few meter changes, and you’ve got an a meaty arrangement at a high level. A brilliant and creative orchestration.
