Moon over Cuba
Juan Tizol’s Moon Over Cuba started life with the title of Puerto Rican Girl. Although the copyright date is 1939, the only performance of this piece is the Victor recording from 1941. This obscure piece never achieved the mild popularity of Ellington’s other 2 Latin masterpieces of that era- Conga Brava and Flaming Sword, but don’t sell this gem short just because you never heard of it.SKU: AL30562 -

This jazz-flavored pop classic by Van Morrison is perfect for jazz ensemble. Roy Phillippe has taken this ‘cool’ tune to a new level of swing. There are opportunities for trombone, alto sax and trumpet solos, whether improvised or played as written. The technical demands are moderate, but the feel is really smooth. Moonlight Serenade is the Glenn Miller theme tune, and one of the best known big band tunes of all time. This is the original arrangement, transcribed by Jeff Hest, and is a completely faithful reproduction. Saxes are scored for clarinet, 2 altos and 2 tenors. The clarinet solo is fully written out and the arrangement comes with rehearsal/performance notes for the bandleader.

Recorded in 1932 by Bennie Moten’s own Kansas City Orchestra, this jazz classic was notably stylized by Count Basie in 1940. Movin’ Uptown
Although Movin’ Uptown has some technical difficulties (range and tempo), it shouldn’t present too much of a musical challenge for your students. The style and content are very similar to a number of Sammy Nest pieces that high school and college bands regularly perform. Since this is an up-tempo flag-waver, Benny Carter chose to use a 64-bar AABA song form instead of the usual 32, which keeps each chorus at a length of one minute.
