Sarabande & Gavotte (from the Holberg Suite, Opus 40)
“Sarabande” and “Gavotte” are the second and third movements of the Holberg Suite, Op. 40, a standard movement of the Baroque suite. Both movements may be performed as part of the entire suite or as a stand-alone selection. This arrangement is true to the original work—as feasible and offers the sonorities of the concert band ensemble in a very playable version. Scenes from the Louvre Young Band Edition
Composer Norman Dello Joio (1913-2008) received an Emmy award for his 1965 score for the television program The Louvre. His concert band adaptation resulted in a five movement suite combining original material with themes by Renaissance composers such as Susato, Lully, and Cesti. In this arrangement for younger players, Robert Longfield skillfully truncates each movement and lessens the technical demands while carefully maintaining the essence of this masterful wind band repertoire classic. Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the ballet The Nutcracker in 1891–1892. Based on Alexandre Dumas’ adaptation of E. T. A.
