Starburst (Digital)
Starburst is a rousing overture that explodes with energy and effervescence. The idea of a starburst pattern (something bursting forth from a central source) inspired the composer to create a concert opener full of joy and excitement for all members of the band as well as the audience. The work is built on three elements: an opening flourish built on 4ths; a lively theme that uses chromaticism; and a brassy fanfare that develops into a fugue. These building blocks are developed throughout, with dynamic contrasts and a relentless drive. Commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band in honor of Douglas Macaulay’s 20th anniversary as music director, Starburst is a salute to the energy and inspiration of this fine musician. Symphonic Portrait (based on Our Director)
F. E. Bigelow composed Our Director in 1892, and in the decades that followed it became widely used in such diverse settings as silent films, vaudeville, World War I, and adapted as college fight songs and alma maters (e.g. Harvard, Rice and Furman). Michael’s impressive setting for band opens with a noble introduction leading to hints of Bigelow’s trio theme. This theme is alternated with an original theme until both appear gloriously at the maestoso. Dedicated to Furman’s Director Emeritus of Bands, Dan Atkins Ellis (1929-2007). This surprisingly accurate, yet playable Dvorák transcription will enhance any program.
