Cathedral Grove
“Cathedral Grove” is a magnificent park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, containing some of the oldest and largest trees in the world. It is the towering, majestic pillars of these ancient giants and the quiet serenity of this place that inspired this music. Evocative and impressionistic in nature, Robert Buckley’s writing depicts the richness of the colors and textures, and the diffused light shining through the canopy of leaves above. At times hauntingly lyrical, and other times prayer-like and reverent, but always filled with awe and beauty. (Includes optional part for acoustic guitar or harp). Celestial Song
Composer Robert Spittal was moved to complete this work in response to the Newtown, CT tragedy in 2012, and serves as a reflection of our complicated feelings of grief and loss. The music is simple and direct, and meant as a hopeful work for young players. Moved by a metaphor describing the victims as “twenty-six new diamonds in the sky” the title is a reference to the stars which we look upward to for inspiration, for hope, and to dream of better things to come. Celtic Farewell
Music has power to help us heal and cope with the loss of loved ones. Using the beloved traditional Scottish ballad “The Parting Glass” combined with an original new melody, here is a beautifully paced and sensitive musical memorial with a Celtic flavor. A key element of this work is the use of Highland bagpipes. If a pipe player is not available, this part is cued in multiple parts throughout the band (or use a synthesizer with bagpipe patch). Celtic Voyage
Inspired by the many hardships of the Irish immigrants, this piece brings hope of a new world, a new lease on life and a second chance. The piece begins with the sound of the ocean in the background (played by the ocean drum) while a solo flute plays the main theme. As the piece develops the theme represents several scenes: first, the knowledge that life needs to change due to the famine and hardships of the time; second, the immigrants begin their move to America; third, the arrival in America and seeing the statue of Liberty, which is the climactic moment of the piece; and finally, ending with the same idea in the beginning of the piece but now as memory and longing for Ireland.SKU: AL31716 -

Chant Rituals
Cast in three main sections, Chant Rituals makes use of two contrasting thematic statements to exploit the timbral and rhythmic resources of the symphonic band. Chanteys is an original work that recalls the music of the sea and its sailors. “Christmas Fanfares” was born from the composer’s desire to write a lively yet not overly difficult concert opener for his band’s holiday program. Initially composed as three separate fanfares—each on a different carol—the fanfares were combined with transitional material to form this larger work.
