As One Listens to the Rain
As One Listens to the Rain is a marriage of two distinct musical ideas. The first, a solitary, solemn melody, is introduced in the trumpet and cloaked in an aura of slowly shifting transparent harmonies. This idea soon gives way to flowing lines and falling gestures that invoke an image of cascading rainfall. A hymn-like interlude provides a brief respite before the return of the rain which, in this final form, spins and tumbles over itself. A stirring and evocative work for modern winds. Barnum and Bailey’s Fractured Favorite
When Karl King was conducting circus bands, he would frequently edit his marches so the same composition could be used for contrasting acts (for example a “lion” act one time, and a “trapeze” act the next). In the same spirit, Thomas Leslie has creatively repurposed this familiar march to suit an imaginary “clown” act; complete with novelty percussion sounds and a few surprises sprinkled in. A bit outrageous, but definitely fun! Dur: c. 2:20SKU: HLPC20702 -

Beyond the Stars
Based on the traditional American shaped-note melody The Promised Land (first published in the 1800s), Beyond the Stars captures the spirit of the early American church musicians who voiced their enthusiasm for life and the freedom of worship through both vocal and instrumental music. The music features several mini-variations wrapped up in four large variations (Fast, Fast, Slow, Fast-recapitulation). The composer has created new thematic material for each variation by excerpting motifs from three separate phrases of the original shaped-note melody. A stunning and powerful work for winds.
