Heritage
Heritage was composed by Jerry Brubaker for the 150th anniversary of the New Holland Band of New Holland, Pennsylvania. This is an organization that has a rich musical heritage dating back to 1856! The work is loosely based upon several Pennsylvania Dutch folk songs. The piece begins with a fanfare that sets up a majestic march. There is a hymn-like slower section which echoes the devout nature of the people of Lancaster county. The very festive rhythmic development section is sure to please the percussion section. Hymn to the Beauty That Was
This stunning lyrical composition is truly something special. A tribute to Jennifer, Hayley, and Michaela Petit, victims of a 2007 home invasion in Cheshire, CT, Hymn to the Beauty That Was is a moving ballad which adds harp (or synthesizer) to the band, and features soloists on flute, English horn (or alto sax), and euphonium. Hymns from the Rig Veda
A century ago, James Causley Windram, then band director of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers (and later the Coldstream Guards) asked Gustav Holst if he would transcribe some of the composer’s Hymns from the Rig Veda for military band. Always a band advocate, Holst readily agreed. In this thoroughly characteristic suite, two of Windram’s settings (Hymn of the Travellers and Battle Hymn) have been edited for modern instrumentation, while a third (Hymn to Manas) has been arranged by Jon Ceander Mitchell from Holst’s original choral setting.

I’m Seventeen Come Sunday
Australian-born Percy Grainger developed into one of the most sensationally successful concert pianists of the early 1900s. As a composer and arranger, he is perhaps best known for his work with folk music. Number eight in Grainger’s British Folk-Music Settings series, “I’m Seventeen Come Sunday” is actually an amalgam of two English folk songs — the main tune collected by Grainger in 1905, from Lincolnshire, and a variant of a tune collected by Cecil J. Iberian Escapades
Written for the Boca Raton Middle School Band in Florida, Iberian Escapades was inspired by the resort architecture of Addison Mizner, whose Mediterranean-style estates launched a “Florida Renaissance” and inspired architects across North America. Mizner identified each of his Boca Raton villas with Spanish names, three of which are captured in this musical collage: El Mirasol (it watches the sun) is a fanciful Flamenco-style opening; El Solano (the east wind) presents exotic colors and romantic themes; and La Guerida (the bounty of war) ends the piece with an aggressive and energetic statement.SKU: AL31725 -

Iditarod (Third Movement of “Portraits of the North”)
The annual Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race between the Alaskan cities of Anchorage and Nome covers 1,049 challenging miles of jagged mountain ranges, dense forests and windswept coastlines. This amazing feat of endurance was the inspiration for Iditarod. In cinematic fashion, the point of view cuts from long-shots to close-ups (from the dog’s view to the eagle’s), constantly moving forward with a relentless pulse. With a brief respite, a majestic, sweeping theme is introduced and develops. And then – back to the race! With renewed energy, the dogs race the final stretch; the music building and intensifying to the very end. Ignition
“Ignition” is a blindingly fast, raucously energetic concert opener that derives its title from the consecutive rising three-note cells that are the building blocks for almost the entire work. However, the energy unleashed in the music and the imagery of the title serve both as a metaphor for the “spark” of creativity, and as a “celebration in sound” for those who find and follow their own true life’s passion and pass it along to others, “igniting” the flame for another generation. In the Center Ring
“In The Center Ring” was written in the autumn of 2003 for the Upper Antioch Grade School Band from Antioch, Illinois, Earl Bush, director. Invocation and Psalm
“Invocation” is defined as the act of invoking or calling upon a deity or spirit for aid, protection, or inspiration, while a “Psalm” is a sacred song or poem. Magnificent, celebratory, and triumphant are words that aptly describe the opening of this exciting new work. After a powerful opening fanfare, the main theme (Invocation) is presented and interlaced with florid woodwind passages and driving rhythms. A simple but evocative melody, garnished with lush harmony, captures the essence of the Psalm. A return to the original theme brings us to an uplifting conclusion. This piece was commissioned by the St. Michael’s College School Senior Band (Toronto, Canada) for the opening of their new theatre.
