New Mexico March
One of Sousa’s more obscure marches, it was dedicated to the governor and the people of New Mexico. You’ll hear the characteristic musical sounds of Latin and American Indian populations indigenous to New Mexico at the time. Typical of the march king, you’ll be impressed with the interesting musical turns. (2:55)SKU: ALBDM03001 -

Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (March)
Now with a full score provided, here’s the original Fennell arrangement of this revered John Philip Sousa march. Although there was always a harp included in the photographs of the Sousa Band, this is the only march in his repertoire that includes a part for the harpist. Northwoods: Of Might and Mettle
This is a musical depiction of the day of a lumberjack in the late 1800s during the great logging drives in Wisconsin. The work begins with “Daylight in the Swamp,” a mysterious setting reminiscent of the early morning conditions. It then transitions to “Waking the Camp” and develops to “Felling the Trees,” a very dynamic segment. “The Ice Breaks” and “On the River” draw the composition to a serious conclusion. A most creative work. This is Robert W. Smith at his very best. (6:46)SKU: ALBDM02036 -

O Waly Waly (A Rhapsody for Band)
Dating from the 1600s, the folk song “O Waly, Waly” (commonly known as “The Water is Wide”) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-note motif common to this song and also “Carolina” (South Caroline’s official song) is developed. This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic flavored Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestoso section for the entire ensemble. A creative and dynamic work for contest or festival! Dur: 5:00SKU: HL04003069 -

Passages
The term “passage” can variously describe a “passageway” of travel, a musical phrase, or perhaps the soul’s moving on from this world to the next. In this work for band, dark and rich sonorities are contrasted with a lilting, Celtic-flavored melody as it alternates with striking “passages” from the brass. Later, an alto sax soloist adds a haunting quality to the mood followed by a return of the ethnic drumming heard earlier. This unique and rewarding composition is beautifully paced and skillfully orchestrated using every section of the band. Dur: 7:00 (Grade 4)SKU: HL04002871 -

Rhythm of the Winds
What a great interplay of rhythms! History will remember this work as one of the most played concert and contest pieces of all time. The alternation of two rhythms—one syncopated and the other an after-beat pattern—form the rhythmic foundation for the work’s theme. This rhythmic pattern has become a staple for many contemporary band compositions. It’s just as classy as it is classic! (5:15)SKU: ALBD00366
