Juba Dance (from Symphony No. 1)
Florence Price (1887-1953) is noted as the first African-American female composer of symphonic works, and is only in recent years beginning to receive the recognition so richly deserved. Commissioned by the McDaniel College Summer Music Camp in Westminster, Maryland, Kirkpatrick’s Muse celebrates 30 years of excellence and is dedicated to camp founder, Dr. Linda Kirkpatrick. The piece opens with a plaintive Irish style flute solo, then moves seamlessly to the fast-paced section loosely based around the Appalachian fiddle tune “Glory in the Meeting House” introduced by the bodhran (Irish frame drum). From Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, this piece tells the tale of a Chinese princess falling under a curse that transforms her into an ugly little girl. Laideronnette exiles herself from her family and land but is rescued by a green serpent. Letter from Home

Liberty
Comprised of two main themes, Liberty strives to capture the essence of Americana. The first of the two themes is stated by a trumpet duet, then later the full ensemble.
