O Waly Waly (A Rhapsody for Band)
Dating from the 1600s, the folk song “O Waly, Waly” (commonly known as “The Water is Wide”) forms the basis for this well-crafted rhapsody for band. The lyrical opening section features solos on flute and euphonium, as a four-note motif common to this song and also “Carolina” (South Caroline’s official song) is developed. This motif unifies the entire work. A Celtic flavored Allegro takes over using this fragment, which leads ultimately to a grand Maestoso section for the entire ensemble. A creative and dynamic work for contest or festival! Dur: 5:00SKU: HL04003069 -

Passages
The term “passage” can variously describe a “passageway” of travel, a musical phrase, or perhaps the soul’s moving on from this world to the next. In this work for band, dark and rich sonorities are contrasted with a lilting, Celtic-flavored melody as it alternates with striking “passages” from the brass. Later, an alto sax soloist adds a haunting quality to the mood followed by a return of the ethnic drumming heard earlier. This unique and rewarding composition is beautifully paced and skillfully orchestrated using every section of the band. Dur: 7:00 (Grade 4)SKU: HL04002871 -

Red Sky (Digital)
The old adage “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight; Red sky in the morning, sailor’s warning” dates back to the 12th century. The idea that a beautiful crimson sky could be both alluring and threatening was the inspiration for this composition – a descriptive, impressionistic work with a wide variety of tonal colors and textures. Beginning with an exotic alto sax solo (later joined by a counter melody in the oboe), there are other cued solos for flute, oboe, Eb clarinet and Bb clarinet. Dur: 6:40SKU: HL4004127
