Along an English Countryside
Composed in 12/8 and entirely in one energetic tempo, this masterful work is a musical tribute to the late Sir Malcolm Arnold, one of the most notable English composers of our time. The opening section features a variety of short solo statements of the theme, which then leads to well-timed and impressive declarations from the entire ensemble. Within in the confines of this brief yet impressive work, Richard manages to skillfully capture feelings of both seriousness and playfulness. Along an English Countryside is wonderful as a program opener for festival or contest.SKU: HL04003201 -

Ancient Desert Drone
Ancient Desert Drone was composed for orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch “drone” throughout the work (similar to Grainger’s own The Immovable Do) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. This transcription for band is an exotic and welcome addition to the repertoire for winds. Aria Della Battaglia
The current edition of Gabrieli’s Aria Della Battaglia was transcribed for the modern orchestra wind section from the Canto Dialoghi Musicali de Diversi Eccelentissimi Autori: Venice 1590. The work is subtitled “per sonare d’instrumenti da fiato” (“to be played by wind instruments”) and is one in a long line of such descriptive works dating from the sixteenth century with no instrumental designation whatsoever. The popularity of this genre, however, did not fade with the close of the Renaissance. Rather, a rich development continued into the nineteenth century with Beethoven’s Wellington’s Victory, the so-called “Battle Symphony,” being a latter-day example.SKU: AL29639 -

Art in the Park
Art in the Park is a four-movement work that musically portrays various styles and techniques used in the visual arts. Beyond Whistler
The closing movement from the Sea to Sky Suite is “Beyond Whistler.” After whisking down this highest and most treacherous of slopes, the listener stops to view what lies beyond. This movement is finalized with a long, slow build to the climax, again using the motif that is present throughout the entire suite. It is to be performed with a great sense of wonder and excitement, with a gradual build to the end. A grand conclusion to this dynamic suite. Also consider programming the first three movements: “March: The Lion’s Gate” (26772), “Shannon Falls” (26773) and “Stawamus Chief” (29630). (7:10)SKU: AL29631 -

Cambrian Explosion
The Cambrian period of our planet’s geological history (roughly 500 million years ago) saw an explosion of plant and animal diversity evolving into many of the complex life forms familiar today. Richard Saucedo gives us an “explosion” of musical forms and surprises in this fast-paced and powerful work for mature bands. A recurring mallet and timpani pattern provides unity amidst a diverse musical palette that ranges from jazzy to celebratory. The sudden appearance of the familiar hymn “For the Beauty of the Earth” is both stunning and dramatic as it ties the entire work together. Wonderfully creative! Dur: 3:10SKU: HL04003007 -

Destino Re-Immaginare (A Fantasy on Motifs of G. Verdi)
The overture to Giuseppe Verdi’s 1862 opera La Forza del Destino (The Power of Fate) has remained standard repertoire for orchestras around the world. In this imaginative work for winds, Jay Bocook pays homage to the mastery of Verdi and begins with the ominous 3-note “fate” theme from the overture. Throughout the piece melodies are recast and harmonies are embellished, culminating in an exhilarating conclusion where the final seven bars quote Verdi’s original almost identically. A brilliant addition to the wind band repertoire.SKU: HL04006124 -

Down to the Sea in Ships (from the NBC TV Film Project 20)
An outgrowth of NBC’s 1952 successful tele-documentary Victory at Sea, was Project 20 two years later: a 30-episode series that was scored completely by Robert Russell Bennett. The episode, called “Down to the Sea in Ships,” utilized this score that initially aired in December of 1968. The magic of the sea, the beauty of ships, and fascination for the men who sail them, are fully explored in this five-movement epic work that relies heavily on sea shanties and folk material. In regarding the work in Bennett’s own words, it “had a lot to tell us about our struggles, triumphs, and defeats on the mighty ocean.” The movements are titled; “The Way of the Ship,” “Mists and Mystery,” “Songs of the Salty Air,” “Waltz of the Clipper Ships,” and “Finale, Introducing the S.S. Eagle March.” This fresh, carefully edited concert band transcription has been extensively researched and will be a cherished addition to serious band literature for generations to come. Finale from Symphony No. 1 (Revised Edition)
The skillful concert band transcriptions of the late Glenn Cliffe Bainum have proven to be a standard by which others are measured. This transcription is one of Mr. Bainum’s most monumental works. Vasily Kalinnikov, a contemporary of Tchaikovsky, died prematurely at 35 just as he was establishing himself as one of the great Russian composers. Originally published in 1958, this new edition features a revised full score and parts for optional antiphonal brass choirs. Dur: ca. 9:00SKU: HL04002975
