L’Esprit du Tour: A Fanfare for Lance
This remarkable piece captures the excitement, physical challenge, intensity and, ultimately, the thrill and sense of accomplishment a rider might experience during such a grueling and demanding physical trial as Le Tour de France. Both tonal and non-tonal compositional materials, some indeterminate and serial techniques, special percussion (a six-tom-tom cluster, heavy chains and four metal plates) along with traditional and non-traditional development procedures are used –impressing upon listeners, through sound, a sense and feel of competitive bicycling, from the point of view of the athletes themselves. In hopes of imbuing the music with the flavor of the various cultures coming together for this contest, the composition contains extant source material as well — including La Marsellaise, The Star-Spangled Banner and a brief reference to The Eyes of Texas.SKU: AL24681 -

La Procession du Rocio
Composer Joaquin Turina (1882-1949) was a native of Spain, but was influenced early in his career by the impressionistic harmonies of Debussy and Ravel while studying in Paris. Upon returning to Spain he drew inspiration from Spanish folk music with La Procession du Rocio becoming one of his best-known works. The music portrays a festival and procession that takes place in the Triana neighborhood of Seville, and is filled with wonderful idiomatic Spanish musical elements. Alfred Reed’s marvelous transcription created in 1962 remains an enduring staple in the repertoire for wind bands. Dur: c. 8:30Recorded by The Keystone Wind Ensemble – Jack Stamp, conductor

Liquid
Commissioned by the North Carolina South Central District Bandmasters Association, Liquid portrays the many different ways that water moves around us. From the opening raindrops and first few notes upon which the piece is built, this fast-paced and engaging work takes us through a series of variations that depict cascading waterfalls, flowing rivers, crashing waves, trickling creeks, and ripples over the surface of a calm lake. The piece culminates with a thunderous setting of the 13th-century Latin hymn “Dies Irae,” or “Day of Wrath.” Dur: 5:30SKU: HLPC21001 -

March and Cortege of Bacchus
Leo Delibes composed his ballet, “Sylvia,” in 1876. It achieved considerable popularity, and several of the individual numbers were grouped into a suite which orchestras all over the world have played. The March and the Cortege of Bacchus appears in Act III of the ballet, describing the arrival of Bacchus and his followers. The music is martial, lyric, grand and brilliant, building to an exciting conclusion.SKU: AL23320 -

Panopticon Rising
The title implies “all watching,” hinting to the mythological Greek Watchman Panoptes and “opticon” for watching. This original contemporary composition opens with an unassuming docile theme. The transparency is rapidly replaced with driving tutti components that furiously depict a vividly punctuated theme. Reminiscent passive melodies interrupt occasionally, building to an uncompromising conclusion. With a vivid percussion contribution, this energy-packed composition is unparalleled. Bravo! Purple Whispers
This remarkable and descriptive work opens and closes with members of the ensemble whispering to one another, creating a soft yet chaotic effect. The simple poem is by the composer: “Whispers move in colored flight, seeking signs of next twilight, purple as the violets grow, warm but rich for all to know.” As the piece progresses, introduced by a solo piano, the listener is taken through a dynamic range of emotional tension and release before the quiet mood returns to close out this uniquely effective composition. Rubies (After Thelonious Monk’s “Ruby, My Dear”)
Composer John Harbison writes: “Rubies is a version of Thelonious Monk’s Ruby, My Dear, which he composed while still in his teens. When I was invited by the Seattle Symphony to make a short piece reflecting my first musical passions, my thoughts were of Bach and Monk. Since I had recently made some Bach-like chorale preludes, I chose to make a version of Monk’s tune, first in a chamber-musical, contrapuntal manner, then in the grand orchestral style I had always heard lurking there.” Dur: 5:30(Recorded live by the Rutgers Symphony Band – Peter Stanley Martin, guest conductor)

Russian Christmas Music
The theme carefully explored by Alfred Reed in this repertoire standard is “Carol of the Little Russian Children” which is an ancient Russian Christmas carol. You can hear four distinct sections originally called “Children’s Carol,” “Antiphonal Chant,” “Village Song” and “Cathedral Chorus” all joined in this continuous contemporary setting. The almost overwhelming sound picture with varied tone colors and brilliant brass choir sounds is a classic in every sense. “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed is a worthy addition to the Belwin Classic Band series. This recording compliments of the United States Air Force Band, Col. Lowell Graham, conductor.SKU: ALFXB219 -

After a brief recapitulation of the opening theme, San Andreas Landscapes then culminates in a dynamic and riveting conclusion. Dur: 6:45SKU: HL50600602 -

Searching for Lost Dreams
“As I began this piece, it was as though I were entering a dream. The music was atmospheric, undefined, and somewhat disorienting. Gradually the material became more focused, but just in time to switch to a very different–though related–sound world, which became the second movement. The overall poignancy, varied sound worlds and dramatic shape of the music suggested the title.” ~Dana Wilson Dur: 8:00 (Recorded by the North Texas Wind Symphony, Jacqueline Townsend, conductor)SKU: HL48024108
