Rush

San Andreas Landscapes
Depicting the beautiful landscapes of the San Andreas terrain in Palm Springs, CA, this programmatic work from Rossano Galante begins with a sparkling introduction mirroring the sun exploding out of the mountainous vistas. The soaring and robust main theme is first stated in the horns and then passed on to the trumpets. A calmer lyric section features a soloistic dialogue in the woodwinds. Second Essay
Composed in 1942, Barber’s Second Essay is a masterwork of concentrated musical drama, with a richness of texture comprised of highly charged and succinctly organized musical modules. The opening theme has a definite American flavor, which is followed by a fugal section that evolves from simple tonal patterns to polytonality. After an intensely rhythmic third section, all elements are combined in a huge climax and coda that round off the work. Spy Ring
Under orders from General George Washington at the height of the Revolutionary War, a spy ring was organized for the purpose of providing critical information on the movement of British forces in the New York area. This dynamic work for band hints at the sense of danger and intrigue at the heart of this operation. The opening strains are propelled by an underlying rhythmic layer with flashes of color from the winds and percussion. Storm and Urge
Edward Fairlie’s Storm and Urge is a significant work for wind band and portrays a journey of emotional turbulence. The title comes from the German “Sturm und Drang,” a literary and musical movement of the late 1700s which focused on extremes of emotion. Opening with a simple and reflective theme, we are then taken through a range of emotional settings from uncertainty to resistance, and then calm resolve and self-knowledge. Suite from All-Night Vigil (Vespers)
All-Night Vigil (Vespers) is a setting of music for a night-long service on the eves of Russian Orthodox holy days, and became one of Rachmaninoff’s favorite compositions. Basing the 15 movements of his choral setting on a combination of traditional Russian Orthodox chants, Latin hymns, and original chants by the composer, the work was completed in less than two weeks in 1915. This arrangement utilizes the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 10th, and 12th movements, along with the traditional “Amens” at the beginning of Movements 1 and 2. Unlike other settings of choral works for wind ensemble, this arrangement is constructed as a complete suite that is intended to allow the performers and audience to experience the power and beauty of the complete Vespers.
