Panopticon Rising
The title implies “all watching,” hinting to the mythological Greek Watchman Panoptes and “opticon” for watching. This original contemporary composition opens with an unassuming docile theme. The transparency is rapidly replaced with driving tutti components that furiously depict a vividly punctuated theme. Reminiscent passive melodies interrupt occasionally, building to an uncompromising conclusion. With a vivid percussion contribution, this energy-packed composition is unparalleled. Bravo! Paradiddles
Percussionists must learn both the rudiments and the scales. This piece provides the wind players some exposure to the rudiments. “Paradiddles” creates patterns played by the winds that mimic two types of paradiddles—the single paradiddle and the double paradiddle. This may be the first piece for concert band inspired by, and based on, percussion rudiments. (5:50)SKU: AL44207 -

Parkour (l’art du déplacement)
Combining brash and aggressive rhythmic figures along with more gentle moments and inventive textures, this impressive work by Samuel Hazo is truly a standout for advanced bands. The piece is built around a four-note motif, which is developed and expanded throughout. A middle section features more of a jazzy flavor with saxes in the spotlight accompanied by finger snaps. The rhythmic intensity returns, building towards a glorious full ensemble affirmation and bringing this exciting work to a powerful conclusion. Dur: 5:45SKU: HL04003063 -

Partita for Band
Composed as a suite, this descriptive work uses four short movements to create varied and distinctive moods. First is a bold Fanfare with rich harmonies, followed by the March in a traditional style. The third movement is a Blues in a minor key, followed by the final Rondo in triple meter. An appealing and creative addition to the young band repertoire. Dur: c. 7:30SKU: HL04004951 -

Passages
The term “passage” can variously describe a “passageway” of travel, a musical phrase, or perhaps the soul’s moving on from this world to the next. In this work for band, dark and rich sonorities are contrasted with a lilting, Celtic-flavored melody as it alternates with striking “passages” from the brass. Later, an alto sax soloist adds a haunting quality to the mood followed by a return of the ethnic drumming heard earlier. This unique and rewarding composition is beautifully paced and skillfully orchestrated using every section of the band. Dur: 7:00 (Grade 4)SKU: HL04002871 -
