The Last Centaur
Composed in the style of a grand and descriptive film score, The Last Centaur is a musical depiction of a centaur who is separated from his family by war, the ensuing adventures, and ultimate reunion with his family and friends. The music begins with a stately, lyrical theme in the horns followed by solo oboe. This main theme is then woven throughout the work as it develops and grows with intensity. The Last Rose of Summer (from the Irish Suite)
The fifth movement of Leroy Anderson’s The Irish Suite, “The Last Rose of Summer,” has never been transcribed for concert band. The Legend of Billy Miner
This composition reflects a colorful time in American history and is an opportunity for your band to discover ragtime rhythms. Folk hero Billy Miner (the Grey Fox) was the last of the old-time bandits. He was noted for his unusual politeness and is believed to be the originator of the phrase, “Hands up!” This composition is like a mini movie score and starts with the Billy Miner ragtime theme, followed by a train robbery, his capture, and final release. The Legend of Castle Armagh
Commissioned by the Cabarrus All-County Middle School Band (Concord, North Carolina), this work was inspired by the composer’s Irish heritage and the rich history of Ireland. With three main themes, this programmatic work opens with a peaceful sunrise with mist rising from the bog. The second theme describes the great hall of a majestic medieval castle, complete with vibrant colors and pageantry.
