New Forest March
Here is a terrific march for young players written in the traditional British style. The opening strains are folk-like in nature with underlying modal harmonies, while the stately trio is reminiscent of the processional style of Elgar and other British composers. The “New Forest” refers to a region in southern England established as a royal hunting preserve by William the Conqueror around the year 1079, which has remained largely unchanged since ancient times. Nexus for Solo Trumpet, Winds and Percussion
The word “nexus” is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus for solo trumpet and band includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins, to whom the work is dedicated. A well-known theme (particularly to Mr. Watkins’ students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings – an energetic and agile scherzo that appears in the beginning and again at the end, contrasted with an expressive ballad theme. The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins, Alfred’s son. This is a well-crafted and rewarding work for soloist and band alike. Dur: 6:00 (Recorded by the University of Alabama at Birmingham Wind Symphony – Dr. Sue Samuels, conductor. Christopher Watkins, trumpet soloist.)
Also available for trumpet with piano reduction – HL00231702.

Night
“Night” is the result of a collaborative project between the composer and the 6th grade beginning band directed by his wife in Morton, Illinois. The students in her band class each write an eight-measure melody as a composition project which is part of the beginning band curriculum. These melodies each start and end on concert B-flat and use only the notes the students have learned on their instruments. The class voted on the best melody, and the winner was “Majestic Night, Oh Winter Night” by Sarah Gunter. The students then observed how this melody was developed by the composer into a concert band piece that they would perform later that year. Compositional terms such as repetition, fragmentation, and augmentation could then be taught to the 6th graders in a new piece for young band that was written just for them.SKU: AL36683 -

Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (March)
Now with a full score provided, here’s the original Fennell arrangement of this revered John Philip Sousa march. Although there was always a harp included in the photographs of the Sousa Band, this is the only march in his repertoire that includes a part for the harpist. The part is included and can be played on a synthesizer. This one’s a real barn burner. (3:20)SKU: ALBDM04013
