Whether the listener’s perspective is that of physical, spiritual, or emotional movement, Barrett’s original work takes the audience on a series of journeys, beginning very peacefully and ending with a furious concluding section. Prelude and Pursuit
John Barnes Chance composed his landmark work for band, Incantation and Dance, in 1960 while in residence at the high school in Greensboro, North Carolina. Commissioned by the Union County (NC) Honor Band, Prelude and Pursuit pays tribute to this important composition and its North Carolina connection. A haunting chant-like theme played by the clarinets sets the tone for the slow section. Similar to Chance’s work, the fast section begins with percussion instruments introducing thematic elements later picked up and developed by the winds. Intensifying rhythmic elements, as well as carefully controlled random playing effects, contribute to an overall sense of excitement and anticipation. Themes are woven throughout various sections of the band before the opening chant motif makes a brief dramatic appearance near the end. Prelude and Revelation
MusicWorks – Grade 3John Moss displays his depth of musicality and impeccable orchestrational style in this uplifting work composed in two main parts. The opening Prelude uses brief solos and rich sonorities to create a sense of anticipation. Revelation is in a faster and determined style and interweaves the percussion section nicely with the full ensemble while developing the main themes. The Prelude then returns for a calm and reflective ending. (5:40)

Presidential Suite
Commissioned by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association to commemorate its 75th anniversary, Presidential Suite recognizes the rich historical heritage of Virginia, particularly as the birthplace of eight United States presidents. Using a suite format, the work focuses on three of the founding fathers. The first movement, Mount Vernon, is a serene musical impression of the home of George Washington. Monticello is the second movement and portrays the stately style of music typical of Thomas Jefferson’s time. The suite concludes with Montpelier, the home of James Madison, and uses bold and majestic motifs to portray the broad and magnificent landscape of Madison’s estate. Dur: c 5:30SKU: HL04004715 -

Presidents Day Parade (March)

Prestidigitation (Alto Saxophone Solo with Band)
“Prestidigitation” means sleight of hand or nimble fingers, and describes the alto saxophone soloist in this innovative and compelling work. The triplet rhythms, walking bass line and call-and-response style blend together to give this piece a playful, jazzy flavor. Written for virtuoso saxophonist Dr. Julia Nolan, this composition is a tour-de-force for both the soloist and the ensemble – a powerful addition to the solo saxophone repertoire! Prestidigitation was co-commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band, the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Sea To Sky Wind Ensemble. Procession of the Sardar (from Caucasian Sketches)
Throughout his compositional career, Mikhail Mikhaylovich Ippolitov-Ivanov (a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov) was fascinated with things oriental, and often wrote with a folksong-based programmatic nationalism. Calvin Custer has transformed this section of Ippolitov-Ivanov’s orchestral suite Caucasian Sketches into a superior work for concert band.
