Propulsion
Propulsion is the action of driving or pushing forwards. It is the force that thrusts a rocket into space, that propels a runner across the finish line, and that fuels the momentum of a dolphin through the waves. With driving percussion, high-energy rhythms, dynamic melodies and an overall sense of excitement, Propulsion by Robert Buckley moves through different musical moods without ever losing its relentless pulse. A tour-de-force for all members of the band and an exhilarating concert opener! Dur: 3:00SKU: HL04003760 -

Psalm 46
Psalm 46 is based upon the chorale melody from “A Mighty Fortress is our God,” the best known Martin Luther hymn which was composed sometime between 1527 and 1529. The hymn’s words paraphrase Psalm 46. Zdechlik’s setting is divided into four major sections with a wide variety of styles and meters that draw to a powerful heroic conclusion. The work, originally published in 1971, is dedicated to Mr. Leon Titus and the Concordia College Band, St. Paul, Minnesota. (9:18)SKU: ALSCHBD09449 -

Pulsation
Written entirely in one tempo, but with the meter alternating between 4/4 and 6/8 throughout, Richard Saucedo creates an ingenious effect of pulsating motion along with layers of textures and sounds. Starting with a soloistic dialogue between flute and clarinet the work progresses to thicker sonorities and percussive effects including clapping and shouting. Definitely an enjoyable work that is off the beaten path! Dur: 2:35 (Grade 2-1/2)SKU: HL04002865 -

Pure Imagination (from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)
With its message of endless possibilities and dreams fulfilled, this piece, from the 1971 Academy-award nominated film score of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), by songwriting team Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, has remained popular since the 1970s—and even more so today, or so says the more than 5.5 million views on YouTube. The tune surfaces three times in the movie, first during the opening title music, then as the feature number by Gene Wilder as he leads his assembled golden ticket winners into the chocolate room, and finally, as part of the “Wonkavator” music at the end. Great fun for all generations, and all generations to come! This arrangement provides a dramatic opportunity to teach expression. A charming and musical choice, it is memorable and heartwarming. Purple Whispers
This remarkable and descriptive work opens and closes with members of the ensemble whispering to one another, creating a soft yet chaotic effect. The simple poem is by the composer: “Whispers move in colored flight, seeking signs of next twilight, purple as the violets grow, warm but rich for all to know.” As the piece progresses, introduced by a solo piano, the listener is taken through a dynamic range of emotional tension and release before the quiet mood returns to close out this uniquely effective composition. Total and extreme development of a four-note motif was the catalyst for the creative seed. Quebec Folk Rhapsody
The rich heritage of French-Canadian folk music dates back several centuries. Robert has chosen three of these songs to create a musical portrait of this colorful culture. The opening piece is the jaunty and dance-like “Monsieur Lecuré,” followed by the hauntingly beautiful “Blanche Comme la Neige.” The piece concludes with the spirited march “Vive la Canadienne!,” which features a drum break and builds to an exciting, rousing finish. The creative use of harmonizations, key changes and dynamic contrasts gives this piece a sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced piece. Dur: 3:35SKU: HLPC25704 -

Quintero
This exciting new piece from Steve Hodges begins with a chorale-type introduction that leads to a dynamic opening statement by the low brass. The main theme is legato to contrast with the busy percussion section. A secondary theme, introduced by the woodwinds, is followed by the return of the introduction with development. The second theme is then repeated by the woodwinds in a light, jazzy style. This leads to a powerful conclusion where the percussion section drives the full ensemble to a rousing finish.SKU: AL20688 -

Quintilian
Quintilian was inspired by the work of the ancient Roman philosopher and educator of the same name, who set forth the original seven liberal arts as the ideal curriculum for educated citizens. After a stirring Roman style fanfare, Mr. Smith uses a quintal theme in both harmony and rhythm to propel the work through its development to a highly dramatic conclusion.
