Big John’s Special
This is a great chart! Arranger David Berger is one of the masters at transcription and/or adaptation of swing era jazz charts. Big John’s Special was composed by Horace Henderson with a light airy feel but plenty of snap and energy throughout. Solos are written-out for 2nd trumpet, 3rd trumpet and 1st alto. It is a hot chart correlated to the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz For Young Peopleâ„¢ curriculum. (3:19)SKU: AL29818 -

Jeep’s Blues
Jeep’s Blues is one of many blues lines written by Ellington’s star alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges. This one was for an Ellington small group recording under Hodges’ name in the late 1930’s. It’s basically just the first 4 bars of the blues and then Hodges improvises the rest of the 12-bar form. Ellington’s later big band arrangement is a very simple enlargement of that original 4-horn chart. There are 2 ensemble choruses, 2 solo choruses, 2 sax section choruses ending with a stride piano cadence. The opening is a loud and glorious ensemble; the closing is a soft and introspective sax section.SKU: AL30561 -

Moon over Cuba
Juan Tizol’s Moon Over Cuba started life with the title of Puerto Rican Girl. Although the copyright date is 1939, the only performance of this piece is the Victor recording from 1941. This obscure piece never achieved the mild popularity of Ellington’s other 2 Latin masterpieces of that era- Conga Brava and Flaming Sword, but don’t sell this gem short just because you never heard of it.SKU: AL30562 -

Stompin’ on a Riff
As an homage to the great Count Basie, composer/arranger David Berger delivers just what the title says—this chart is truly Stompin’ on a Riff. Features include a piano intro, a sax section melody and some brass, written solos for 2nd trumpet and 1st alto, a modulation, some piano fills, another modulation and a diminuendo into the shout chorus. This chart swings hard—you’ll love it! (3:41)“This excellent blues chart in the Basie style uses the keys of G, A-flat, E-flat, and A-flat. The written solos for piano, trumpet, and alto sax include changes and fit the style well. The writing includes a great shout chorus and some neat plunger work for the trumpets”
