I’m Beginning to See the Light
This is a swinger all the way! The tempo can be anywhere between 132–150 BPM and there is a written-out trumpet 2 solo. There’s plenty of swingin’ ensemble, a great sax section soli, plus optional parts for flute, clarinet, vibes, horn, baritone horn, and tuba. Add in trumpet plungers and sliding trombones and it’s all great stuff!SKU: AL40348 -

In a Sentimental Mood(Trumpet Feature)
Jazz Classics for the Young Ensemble – Grade 3No one handles Ellington for younger ensembles better than Mark Taylor, and this well-crafted arrangement shows why. Although Mark uses a written trumpet solo on the bridge, the main theme is handled by the full ensemble playing primarily tutti rhythms. Included are solos for trumpet and tenor (written or ad lib.) then a brief double time swing section featuring the entire ensemble. We think the Duke himself would have liked this one.SKU: HL07010981 -

It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)
You may think this chart is all swing but it begins as a Latin then alternates with a swing feel—very clever! The tempo is bright at around 190-200 BPM. With written-out solos for trumpet and tenor sax, a few piano montunas, a big shout chorus and the big ending closes up this fine chart. It’s hot! (3:20)SKU: AL46157 -

Jeep’s Blues
Jeep’s Blues is one of many blues lines written by Ellington’s star alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges. This one was for an Ellington small group recording under Hodges’ name in the late 1930’s. It’s basically just the first 4 bars of the blues and then Hodges improvises the rest of the 12-bar form. Ellington’s later big band arrangement is a very simple enlargement of that original 4-horn chart. There are 2 ensemble choruses, 2 solo choruses, 2 sax section choruses ending with a stride piano cadence. The opening is a loud and glorious ensemble; the closing is a soft and introspective sax section.SKU: AL30561 -

Mood Indigo
This medium swing arrangement of the dreamy Ellington tune will cook at just about any tempo (though the recommended tempo is 108 BPM). The chart features a written tenor sax solo and a lot of interplay between the brass and saxes. It even has a 4-bar stop-time section for a rhythmic contrast. The Duke would be pleased that you’re playing one of his songs on your next concert program.SKU: AL36053 -

Moon over Cuba
Juan Tizol’s Moon Over Cuba started life with the title of Puerto Rican Girl. Although the copyright date is 1939, the only performance of this piece is the Victor recording from 1941. This obscure piece never achieved the mild popularity of Ellington’s other 2 Latin masterpieces of that era- Conga Brava and Flaming Sword, but don’t sell this gem short just because you never heard of it.SKU: AL30562
