Laideronnette: Impératrice des Pagodes (from Ma mère l’oye )
From Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, this piece tells the tale of a Chinese princess falling under a curse that transforms her into an ugly little girl. Laideronnette exiles herself from her family and land but is rescued by a green serpent. Menuet sur le nom d’Haydn
This delightful little miniature is an arrangement of Ravel’s short minuet for piano written in homage to Classical era composer, Joseph Haydn. It was composed in 1909 and published a year later in 1910. Ravel based the raw material for this minuet on the notes whose letter names are the musical equivalents of Haydn’s name. Mother Goose Suite
Ravel wrote the Mother Goose Suite for two children who were very special to him. His fascination with the wonder and imagination of childhood are evident in this piece. This arrangement will take your young band on a journey through the enchanted world of fairy tales—from the reflective “Sleeping Beauty Pavane,” to the playful “Tom Thumb,” the exotic “Empress of the Pagoda,” through the courtship of “Beauty and the Beast,” and concluding where all fairy tales must, with a happily-ever-after ending in “The Fairy Garden.” This piece is an excellent vehicle for featuring your soloists, and the well-crafted orchestration will showcase the wealth of sound and colors in any band. This hauntingly beautiful piece is one of Maurice Ravel’s most popular piano works. Robert W. Smith’s transcription for winds contrasts a ‘music box’ effect in bells and triangle against the dynamic rise and fall of the winds. Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte (Pavanne for a Dead Princess)
Maurice Ravel was only 24 when his piano solo “Pavane Pour une Infante Defunte,” which translated means Pavane for a dead princess, became the rage of the drawing rooms and salons of Paris in 1899, but the work already held the unmistakable stamp of his style. Ravel orchestrated the work in 1910. Jerry Brubaker presents this lovely work in a Concert band setting with all of the lush melodies and harmonies of the original work but with simplified ranges and a comfortable key.
