Quebec Folk Rhapsody
The rich heritage of French-Canadian folk music dates back several centuries. Robert has chosen three of these songs to create a musical portrait of this colorful culture. The opening piece is the jaunty and dance-like “Monsieur Lecuré,” followed by the hauntingly beautiful “Blanche Comme la Neige.” The piece concludes with the spirited march “Vive la Canadienne!,” which features a drum break and builds to an exciting, rousing finish. The creative use of harmonizations, key changes and dynamic contrasts gives this piece a sophisticated sound and intensity of a much more advanced piece. Dur: 3:35SKU: HLPC25704 -

Red Sky (Digital)
The old adage “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight; Red sky in the morning, sailor’s warning” dates back to the 12th century. The idea that a beautiful crimson sky could be both alluring and threatening was the inspiration for this composition – a descriptive, impressionistic work with a wide variety of tonal colors and textures. Beginning with an exotic alto sax solo (later joined by a counter melody in the oboe), there are other cued solos for flute, oboe, Eb clarinet and Bb clarinet. Dur: 6:40SKU: HL4004127 -

Sea of Clouds 3rd Movement of The Seas of the Moon
The third movement of Robert Buckley’s grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the “seas” of the moon, Sea of Clouds was inspired by a series of paintings done by Claude Monet in the London fog. Monet captured the gradations of light as it was affected by fog with ghostly images sifting through. This movement is mostly subdued and dreamlike, the music ebbing and flowing and eventually building to a vast wall of sound and then dissolving into silence. Dur: 5:05SKU: HLPC20998 -

Sea of Tranquility 1st Movement of The Seas of the Moon
Since the beginning of humanity we’ve been mesmerized by the moon, and what were originally thought to be “seas” appearing on the surface. The “Sea of Tranquility” is probably the best-known of these thanks to the landing of Apollo 11 in 1969. The first movement of Robert Buckley’s four-movement suite captures the astronauts’ sense of awe and wonder of their journey from lift-off, to weightlessness, to the triumph and jubilation of the lunar landing itself. Serpent Sea 4th Movement of The Seas of the Moon
The fourth movement of Robert Buckley’s grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the “seas” of the moon, Serpent Sea is animated, exuberant and somewhat over-the-top. It was inspired by the idea of two huge winged serpents rising out of the waves and frolicking together in a wild, barbaric dance. The pair do, however, show a more graceful side every once in a while – represented by an exotic theme that starts in the clarinet and flute. The movement ends with a wild flurry as the serpents vanish back into the sea. Dur: 3:50SKU: HLPC20999 -

Shakespeare Meets Godzilla (The Good Bard and the Ugly)
This inventive and entertaining piece is a mash-up of two entirely different music styles – Renaissance music and classic horror music. Danger is afoot! Shakespeare, armed with only his quill, must stop an enormous creature from destroying his Globe Theatre. As in an epic film score, the music underpins and adds drama to the heroic tale. The effective orchestration and artful interplay between the two music styles gives this piece the colorful sound and intensity of a much more advanced piece.SKU: HLPC24368 -

Starburst (Digital)
Starburst is a rousing overture that explodes with energy and effervescence. The idea of a starburst pattern (something bursting forth from a central source) inspired the composer to create a concert opener full of joy and excitement for all members of the band as well as the audience. The work is built on three elements: an opening flourish built on 4ths; a lively theme that uses chromaticism; and a brassy fanfare that develops into a fugue. These building blocks are developed throughout, with dynamic contrasts and a relentless drive. Commissioned by the West Vancouver Youth Band in honor of Douglas Macaulay’s 20th anniversary as music director, Starburst is a salute to the energy and inspiration of this fine musician.
