El Gato Montés (The Wild Cat)
In a famous moment from Manuel Penella’s 1916 opera El Gato Montés (“The Wildcat”), a matador sings exuberantly to his beloved young gypsy woman that he will fight the bulls for her. In this marvelous adaptation, Shelley Hanson combines the march melody from this scene along with another melody from the opera in creating a well-balanced and appealing work for the concert stage. Elegy for Albinoni
Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) was a prolific Baroque-era composer whose works are now rarely performed. However, he was much admired by J.S. Bach who used examples of Albinoni’s music in his teaching, and also used themes written by Albinoni as the basis for some of his own pieces. Elegy for Albinoni, a beautiful memorial piece in honor of this musical master, uses a romantic tone to set the stage for a theme based on one of Albinoni’s violin sonatas. A rewarding work! Evening Song (Abendlied)
Written in 1873, Evening Song is one of the best-known choral works of Josef Rheinberger (1839-1901), German composer, organist and teacher. Displaying an exceptional lyric quality and utilizing a full range of dynamic contrast, Shelley Hanson’s arrangement is specifically designed with flexible instrumentation to be performed in a variety of ways. Toccata (“Atalanta”)
“Woodwind and percussion players usually are unfamiliar with the antiphonal brass choir tradition. I made this modern, more easily readable version of Bonelli’s classic 1600 Toccata for flexible wind ensemble with optional percussion, so that as few as 8 players up to full symphonic band could play in this style.
