Aria Della Battaglia
The current edition of Gabrieli’s Aria Della Battaglia was transcribed for the modern orchestra wind section from the Canto Dialoghi Musicali de Diversi Eccelentissimi Autori: Venice 1590. The work is subtitled “per sonare d’instrumenti da fiato” (“to be played by wind instruments”) and is one in a long line of such descriptive works dating from the sixteenth century with no instrumental designation whatsoever. The popularity of this genre, however, did not fade with the close of the Renaissance. Rather, a rich development continued into the nineteenth century with Beethoven’s Wellington’s Victory, the so-called “Battle Symphony,” being a latter-day example.SKU: AL29639 -

Ariel
This original overture demonstrates a sense of lightness and buoyancy. The title is borrowed from the sprite-like character in William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest.” A spirit whose name is derived from “air,” Ariel is capricious, ethereal, and mischievous—adjectives that apply to this piece. A cherished new addition to the repertoire! (4:00)SKU: AL38361 -

Arlington (Where Giants Lie Sleeping)
Composed as a tribute to generations of American servicemen and women buried at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., this powerful and emotional work is a fitting addition to any memorial occasion or patriotic concert. Offstage trumpets announce the opening theme followed by reverent strains and a solemn statement of My Country, ‘Tis of Thee. The piece develops and builds gradually, reaching a heroic climax with the familiar hymn God of Our Fathers before returning to a quiet and reflective mood as the offstage trumpets return. Arrows
This impressive work by Samuel Hazo begins and ends with a unifying dramatic and powerful fanfare theme. In contrast, the middle section is built around faster and modern-sounding rhythms and harmonies, while incorporating traditional melodies (including a hint of Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring) lending a unique and timeless quality to the music. Commissioned as a tribute from one band director to his predecessor, this is a rewarding and effective work for today’s bands. Dur: 5:00SKU: HL04003856 -

Art in the Park
Art in the Park is a four-movement work that musically portrays various styles and techniques used in the visual arts. Musical representations of high energy cubism, dreamy impressionistic aquarelle, the nobility and subtle shadings of chiaroscuro, and a percussion ensemble’s rendition of a sgraffito are included, with the orchestration designed to depict the style of the brushstrokes in each painting. As a Wind from the North
As a Wind from the North was inspired by the writings of Byron Reece and commissioned by the Northwinds Symphonic Band of Gainesville, Georgia (Ronald J. Evans, Conductor), and was premiered at the Georgia Music Educators All-State Conference in Savannah. The piece is a fantasy based on the hymn “King of Glory” by David Charles Walker.SKU: AL24676 -

As One Listens to the Rain
As One Listens to the Rain is a marriage of two distinct musical ideas. The first, a solitary, solemn melody, is introduced in the trumpet and cloaked in an aura of slowly shifting transparent harmonies. This idea soon gives way to flowing lines and falling gestures that invoke an image of cascading rainfall. A hymn-like interlude provides a brief respite before the return of the rain which, in this final form, spins and tumbles over itself. A stirring and evocative work for modern winds. As Tears Fall on Dawn’s New Light
Even though the ranges and rhythms are quite modest in this beautiful lyric piece for young bands, there is a wealth of musicality to be learned and enjoyed. Delicate and sensitive in the beginning, there is a logical ebb and flow to the music as it builds to a full ensemble climax then back to the quieter texture and harmonic shift at the end. A rewarding setting for your young players. Dur: 3:40SKU: HL04003520
