Moravian Folk Rhapsody
This work for band is a setting of several delightful Moravian folk dances. “Stoji hruska v oudoli” is a fast-paced two-step dance. “Rozluc se Ancicko” features a clarinet solo in a mournful, yet lilting, slow 6/8 melody. “Preskoda nastokrat” is a highly rhythmic piece in a moderate tempo that features a brief double reed/piccolo section. “Ma zlata maticka” begins with an unaccompanied alto saxophone solo, then includes a folk dance that begins slowly and increases in tempo. “Vojaci jedou” is a proud and uplifting march in 3/4 time. “U Kláštera pole” ends the rhapsody with a lively 2/4 dance that builds to a rousing conclusion. Performers and audiences alike will enjoy the wonderful colors and tonality of this charming music from the Czech Republic. (9:20)SKU: AL22280 -

More Cowbell
More Cowbell was inspired by the famous television skit featuring a rock band, a record producer, and an over-zealous cowbell player. If the cowbell player is good at hamming it up (and rocking out!), you could try the following staging suggestions: Cowbell player plays with intensity and lots of movement, and starts moving in measure 17 toward the front of the band, ending up next to the conductor in measure 24, bowing to the audience on beat 4. Conductor gives a stern look and gestures to student to get back in the percussion section (possibilities: “slit throat” gesture with side of first finger followed by pointing forcefully to the back, or similar gestures). Student slinks back, starts playing cowbell again, but quietly this time. Playing gradually picks up intensity, and player starts again toward the front in measure 41, reaching the front by measure 48. In measure 48, either A) Conductor waves hands violently for student to stop, or B) have a couple of students place a large blanket over the cowbell player. This works, but only for one measure (player quits and doesn’t move in bar 49). Cowbell player resumes playing with a vengeance in measure 50 (either in spite of the teacher or under the blanket!). Make sure your new “rock star” takes another bow at the end of the piece. Have fun, and may your life always have more cowbell! Correlated with Accent on Achievement, Book 1, page 27.SKU: AL24637 -

Morpheus
Morpheus, the Greek God of Dreams, is represented in part by the powerful pulses that open this work, indicative of his power. Made up of high-energy, driving rhythms that establish the mood, this is truly an epic work for beginners. The repetitive rhythmic passages make the work sound difficult, but it’s easy to master. Morris Dance Tunes
Morris dancing has been part of English culture and tradition for more than five centuries and still flourishes today in all parts of the UK. Douglas Wagner has made use of Holst’s charismatic style in these four spirited ‘dance’ tunes which now each include a brief introduction that also serves as an interlude for this through-played work. A charming cross-cultural addition to the concert band repertoire!“This attractive educational material will provide many teaching opportunities.”

Mosswood Lullaby
With sweeping melodic lines and ample opportunities for phrasing and dynamics, this original work provides a wonderful moment of expression for any performance. The piece was written as a gift by the composer to long-time friends Gary and Brittney Williams to celebrate the birth of Olivia Paige Williams in 2008 on behalf of the Byrd Middle School Symphonic Band, and was premiered at the 2009 TMEA CCC Honor Band Concert with Mrs. Williams as the conductor. Mother Goose Suite
Ravel wrote the Mother Goose Suite for two children who were very special to him. His fascination with the wonder and imagination of childhood are evident in this piece. This arrangement will take your young band on a journey through the enchanted world of fairy tales—from the reflective “Sleeping Beauty Pavane,” to the playful “Tom Thumb,” the exotic “Empress of the Pagoda,” through the courtship of “Beauty and the Beast,” and concluding where all fairy tales must, with a happily-ever-after ending in “The Fairy Garden.” This piece is an excellent vehicle for featuring your soloists, and the well-crafted orchestration will showcase the wealth of sound and colors in any band. Being generously cued, even smaller bands will be able to enjoy Ravel’s music. Mother Goose Suite is sure to delight the little child in all of us.SKU: AL33846 -

Mountain Thyme (A Setting of “The Braes of Balquhidder”)
Written as a memorial, this beautifully emotional setting is a reworking of the traditional folk song “The Braes of Baquhidder” (also known as “Wild Mountain Thyme”) by Scottish writer Robert Tannahill. Mouvement Frénétique
Mouvement Frénétique is a short, dynamic, frenetic, and rhythmic flight of fancy based on a simple motif of four notes that are repeated, varied and developed throughout. Rhythmic percussion, a broad mix of colors, and use of the Lydian scale add complexity, beauty, and energy to this electrifying piece. (5:30)SKU: AL48150 -
